In a previous post, I discussed how Artificial Intelligence (AI) is promising to revolutionize workplace learning, but suggested that we should be cautious about blanket and blind implementation of some of its learning solutions. For example, as head of training at my last organization, nearly every day I would receive emails from vendors reaching out to sell me training development solutions promising to create "quality" AI-generated training in ten minutes. Neat tools. However, while the influx of rapid AI training generators is intriguing, I remain skeptical about the effectiveness of the training they currently deliver. I do think that they hold great capability to enhance and speed up training development. But as they are currently being proposed, they shouldn't ever be considered a replacement for having an actual Instructional Designer or... ahem ...Human work with the content. That being said, on the flip side, looking to the future, "Instructional Designers" should look to rebrand themselves to where hopefully their true heart lies (at least it does for me), to being rebranded as "Learning Experience Designers". I believe that visionary Learning Departments will implement AI to remove the time-consuming focus on creating perfect content because robots are excellent at editing and organization. The new expectation of Instructional Designers therefore will be to focus on the Employee as a Learner Experience. That however is a topic for another article. All in all, I can say these rapid development platforms do provide a decent starting point for instructional designers (IDs), and their future utilization will be interesting to watch.
The Promise of AI in Spaced Learning
I've been implementing, administrating, and working within LMS systems for over twenty years at this point. It has been interesting watching how systems have moved from being simple content management training tracking/delivery systems to becoming true learning ecosystems with greater and greater learner and admin support. Additionally, given the increase in the known value of microlearning type training in the workplace, one area where AI training solutions are finally beginning to show substantial promise is in spaced learning. This is good news, as supported by studies in brain-based learning strategies, spaced learning is one of the best methods to support employees in retaining and applying important information.
Here are some key benefits of Spaced Learning:

Real-World Application: Phishing Simulations
A practical example of spaced learning's effectiveness is seen in organizations conducting frequent phishing simulations. A 2021 report by KnowBe4, a security awareness training company, found that regular phishing tests reduced susceptibility rates by up to 87% over a year. This significant reduction highlights the power of spaced learning in enhancing cybersecurity awareness without being exhaustive. Employees who fail a test receive quick, targeted follow-up training, making the process non-invasive and effective with no manual effort by learning administrators.
Future Prospects for LMS and AI
Looking forward, learning management systems (LMS) that can easily facilitate implementing and publishing AI-driven spaced learning programs will outshine their competitors. Simplifying these capabilities for learning administrators is a crucial area for improvement in the LMS space. Such advancements will not only streamline administrative tasks but also maximize the benefits of spaced learning.
Conclusion
In conclusion, while the potential of AI in learning and development is immense, it is crucial to implement it thoughtfully. The success of AI in spaced learning, as demonstrated by phishing simulations, underscores its ability to improve retention, efficiency, and problem-solving skills. Future LMS innovations that integrate AI-driven spaced learning will set new standards in employee training, transforming learning environments and enhancing organizational performance. As we continue to explore AI's role in education and workplace learning, strategic and careful adoption will be key to unlocking its full potential. How is your organization currently positioned in harnessing this learning strategy along with the technology advancements?
Thanks Joe, this is a concise nice article. I like the KnowBe4 example. As I had the chance to use their training, I often looked at it as a good example for content presentation in a digestible meaningful way. I am certain that as we approach higher AI maturity, the solutions will emerge more refined allowing the 'Learning Experience Designers' to be more effective in their content creation allowing more focus on the fundamentals.
