Exploring the Parallels: Comparing ChatGPT to the Star Trek Computer and Its Role in Human-AI Interaction

In the Star Trek universe, the 'computer' is an advanced artificial intelligence system integrated into starships and space stations. It is designed to assist the crew in various tasks, ranging from managing ship systems to providing information on demand. Crew members interact with the computer using voice commands, often beginning their queries with "Computer" to get its attention. The computer can understand and respond to natural language, making it an intuitive and efficient tool for the crew.

ChatGPT, like the Star Trek computer, is an AI language model designed to understand and generate human-like text based on user input. It can engage in conversations, provide information, and assist users in various tasks. While ChatGPT doesn't have direct control over physical systems like the Star Trek computer, it can still provide assistance through its ability to understand natural language and generate relevant responses.

There are several similarities between the way people in Star Trek interact with the 'computer' and how users engage with ChatGPT:

  1. Natural language understanding: Both the Star Trek computer and ChatGPT can understand and process natural language input, allowing users to communicate with them in a conversational manner.
  2. Information retrieval: Just as the Star Trek computer can provide information on a wide range of topics, ChatGPT can also answer questions and provide information based on its extensive training data.
  3. Contextual understanding: Both systems can grasp the context of the user's request and provide appropriate responses accordingly.

However, there are some notable differences as well:

  1. Integration with physical systems: Unlike the Star Trek computer, which is integrated with various ship systems and can execute commands, ChatGPT exists solely as a text-based AI and does not have the ability to directly control physical systems.
  2. Level of AI advancement: The Star Trek computer is depicted as a more advanced AI with deeper understanding and capabilities, while ChatGPT, though impressive, is still a developing technology and might not always provide accurate or contextually appropriate responses.

In summary, ChatGPT can be considered an early-stage version of the Star Trek computer, with its ability to understand and generate human-like text based on user input. As AI technology continues to advance, it's possible that we will see even more similarities between real-world AI systems like ChatGPT and the fictional Star Trek computer.

I love this and its a great take. I found this searching to see if anyone else had made this connection. There's been so much anxiety about Chat GPT and other models like it taking people's jobs or taking over the world and I think its uncalled for especially when you put into the perspective of Star Trek's computer.

Giles, I cannot believe you raised Chat GPT today - a contact showed me over lunch. I will read your article with interest. H

Interesting blog Giles Walker! I wonder whether we will ever close the gap between ChatGPT and a starship-grade AI, and if so, how long it might take? Any thoughts? ??
