2. The Informative Hyper-visual on Antipsychotic Induced Weight Gain and Metabolic Syndrome: A Guide for Psychiatrists for Download.?

In our featured article, we take a deep dive into the intriguing intersection of psychoanalytic principles and their neuroscientific foundations. Our exploration challenges the notion of a separate mind-brain-body divide, suggesting that these core entities are inherently interconnected.

As we contemplate the shape of psychiatry in the 21st century, one of the greatest risks we face is reductionism. Specifically, psychiatry is at risk of becoming a house divided against itself, with psychosocial specialists in one camp and neuroscientists in another. While we know that mind and brain are inseparable, our literature and our practice do not always reflect that. (Gabbard, 2000)

You'll discover that contemporary investigations shed light on potential neurobiological foundations within various psychoanalytic frameworks.

The Neurobiology of Freud's Psychoanalytic Theories Neuropsychoanalysis?

Sigmund Freud, a pioneer in psychoanalysis, recognised the significance of neuroscience in his early theories.

His 1895 work, 'Project for a Scientific Psychology/Psychology for Neurologists,' was an early attempt to understand the mind from a neurobiological perspective.

Though Freud eventually moved away from neuroscience in his formal theory, he remained convinced, even in his later years (Freud, 1938), of the ongoing necessity of neuroscience to substantiate his provisional propositions in psychoanalysis.

Remarkably, Freud's conceptualisation of the ego, id, and superego mirrors contemporary descriptions of the triple networks that play a pivotal role in optimal psychological and physical functioning.

In an alternate era, it is plausible that Freud would have revisited and seamlessly integrated neuroscience into his theories—a trajectory he initially embarked upon, ultimately coming full circle.

Recent advancements in the field of neuroimaging have provided unprecedented opportunities for profound and detailed investigations.

These advances offer a deeper comprehension of psychoanalytic theory, models, observations, and the intricate functions and dysfunctions of the mind-brain system.

In this? article, we cover:

  1. Core Principles of Psychoanalysis
  2. Freud's theory of Consciousness?
  3. The Neuroscience of Freud's Concept of Mind: The Id, The Ego and The Superego with their Neural Correlates
  4. Psychiatric Illnesses and Their Connection to the Id, Ego, Superego, and Contemporary Neuroscience
