Exploring Myopia: How Sweden's Educational Approach Impacts Children's Eye Health

A longitudinal study in Sweden examined myopia incidence and predictors in 128 schoolchildren aged eight to 16, revealing a cumulative incidence of 5.5% and an incidence rate of 3.2 cases per 100 person-years. The researchers suggested that lower educational pressure in Sweden, where formal schooling begins at age seven and includes ample outdoor time, may contribute to lower myopia rates compared to East Asian countries, where high educational pressure starts earlier. They hypothesized that this difference in educational practices facilitates a more natural eye development process, potentially leading to lower myopia prevalence in Swedish children. The study highlights the significant roles of genetics and environmental factors in myopia incidence across different regions.
