Exploring Museums, Unearthing Heritage: A Reflection on Philippine History and Its Modern Relevance

Exploring Museums, Unearthing Heritage: A Reflection on Philippine History and Its Modern Relevance

Introduction:

During my recent visit to La Salle University - Ozamiz , I was struck by how passionately locals spoke about their town and the city's history. As a Filipino, an HR Leader, and a Hospitality Professional, I was also motivated to reconsider my understanding of our own Philippine history.

As a result, I decided to reestablish my connection with Philippine history by visiting the National Museum of the Philippines in Manila last weekend. This is also in connection to "Museums and Galleries Month," observed in the month of October every year with this year's theme - "Exhibits and Reflections: Creating Opportunities for the New World." This theme encompasses the role of museums and galleries in showcasing art forms as an avenue to interpret various facets of humanity that have been discussed for years. From intrapersonal to global issues, museums and galleries have been the host to various microcosms that serve as catalysts for human beings from all walks of life, providing chances to reflect, restart, and redirect themselves to a better future. The said theme aligns with the celebration of the 2023 International Museum Day: "Museums, Sustainability, and Wellbeing," which aims to achieve the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals, focusing on regulating climate, fostering inclusivity, and tackling socio-personal issues. It also integrates the narrative of the theme of the 125th Celebration of Philippine Independence: "Kalayaan, Kinabukasan, Kasaysayan," which aims to highlight the opportunities made by our ancestors to attain the freedom we achieve right now, and how shall the present preserve and pass it on for more generations to come.

Part 1: National Museum of Fine Arts - Embracing Artistry in HR

My visit to the National Museum of Fine Arts was a revelation. As an HR professional, I've always valued human capital as the backbone of any organization. However, walking through the exquisite galleries of fine arts, I was reminded that the essence of human capital extends beyond numbers and skills. Just like each piece of art tells a unique story, every employee brings their own narrative to the workplace.

As HR leaders, it's essential that we appreciate the diverse perspectives, talents, and experiences our team members bring. Just as a masterpiece is created through the combination of colors, shapes, and strokes, an organization's success is driven by the fusion of diverse talents and backgrounds.

To quote the famous artist Pablo Picasso, "Every child is an artist, the problem is staying an artist when you grow up."

This resonates with the idea that as HR professionals, we should create a workplace that encourages creativity, innovation, and the preservation of the innate artistry within each employee.

Part 2: National Museum of Anthropology - Hospitality's Roots in Our Past

My journey through the National Museum of Anthropology transported me back in time to our Filipino heritage. The warmth and hospitality that have always been intrinsic to our culture were on full display. As a professional in the hospitality business, it reminded me that our industry has deep roots in the customs and traditions of our people.

Hospitality is more than just a business; it's a reflection of our identity. Just as the various indigenous artifacts showcased in the museum represent the different cultures that make up our diverse nation, our approach to hospitality should be culturally sensitive and inclusive.

In the words of Maya Angelou, "We all should know that diversity makes for a rich tapestry, and we must understand that all the threads of the tapestry are equal in value no matter their color."

Embracing the rich tapestry of our culture allows us to provide authentic and memorable experiences to our guests, connecting them with our history and heritage.

Part 3: National Museum of Natural History - Leadership in Sustainability and Conservation

The National Museum of Natural History serves as a powerful reminder of the need for sustainable leadership. Our natural resources are not infinite, and it's our responsibility to protect them for future generations. The interconnectedness of life on Earth, displayed in this museum, underscores the importance of preserving our environment.

To borrow the wisdom of Chief Seattle, "We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children."

As leaders, we must be stewards of our planet. This sentiment is at the heart of sustainability and conservation efforts.

We need to integrate sustainability into our leadership practices, promoting responsible resource management, reducing waste, and protecting our ecosystems. Just as each exhibit in the museum is a testament to the wonder and diversity of the natural world, we must strive to maintain this wonder for generations to come.

Exploring these museums has been an enriching experience that not only deepened my connection to our Philippine history but also provided valuable insights into my roles as an HR professional, a Hospitality Professional, and a leader committed to sustainability and conservation.

Let's embrace the lessons of the past to create a brighter future.
