Exploring Minds Labyrinth: Navigating Psychology In the Risk Sector

Exploring Minds Labyrinth: Navigating Psychology In the Risk Sector

Popular myths of Corporate Security & Risk professionals:

We are impervious to emotions. Showing emotions is weakness

Stoic being our middle name

We always know the right thing to do

We are always available 24/7/365

We are NOSTRADAMUS

We can never fail

On October 17, 2024, during the inaugural Asia South Asia Conference in Mumbai, we chose to tackle a subject often discussed in hushed tones: the importance of navigating mental pressures of the Corporate Risk & Security Professionals within the risk sector. In my three decades of experience in the corporate risk vertical, I can confidently say this topic has never been addressed.

We were fortunate to partner with Anuradha Kavuri , an accomplished and enthusiastic psychologist. With her guidance, we explored the psyche of the stoic Corporate Risk and Security professional—those who are often seen as all-knowing and in control, yet bear the weight of significant responsibility for their organisations' security.

Our discussions emphasised the critical need for self-awareness regarding mental health to function optimally. We delved into often-overlooked issues such as anxiety, stress, depression, and burnout, examining their physical manifestations. Additionally, we addressed the taboo surrounding emotional expression among Corporate Risk and Security professionals and its perceived connection to personal weakness. Anuradha effectively demystified many myths surrounding mental well-being, providing valuable insights into how these issues impact both individuals and organisations

During the discussions we could see that the audience was nodding away during the discussions. Post the end of the discussion I saw that there were many professionals who were crowding around Anuradha to clarify their doubts.

The session was well received & it just reiterated the need of the hour to be sensitive to all issues of mental well-being for being able to lead a balanced life while being successful.

Agree. Showing emotions was out of a JD for security professionals during last decade or so, now with a maturing and understanding business mindset - sharing emotions is taken well !!

Anuradha Kavuri brought invaluable insights into the psychological challenges in this space, helping break the silence around these critical topics.? The engaging session truly resonated with the audience, as evident from the thoughtful questions and interactions afterward. It reaffirmed the importance of prioritizing mental well-being to maintain both personal balance and professional success.
