Exploring the Marketing Frontier: A Journey Through George Brown College

Have you ever felt the exhilaration of being surrounded by industry experts, soaking in their wisdom, and forging connections that could shape your career? That's precisely the experience I had at George Brown College , enrolled in the Marketing Management - Digital Media program. As my course at George Brown College comes to an end, I find myself reflecting on the classes that have influenced my journey - Digital Media Marketing Seminar Class, led by Prof. Wendy Greenwood as it has been a whirlwind of learning, networking, and growth. Throughout this seminar series, I had the opportunity to attend talks by distinguished George Brown College alumni, providing insights into the marketing industry.

What I Learned:

Throughout the semester, I had the privilege of attending enlightening seminars led by industry luminaries such as Lia Grimberg, CLMP?, MBA , Sam Leung , and Blair Roebuck . Each speaker brought a unique perspective to the table, offering invaluable insights into various facets of marketing, from loyalty programs to AI integration and marketing science.

One speaker who truly stood out to me was Blair Roebuck Vice President of Marketing Science at Valtech . Her expertise in marketing science and the emphasis on data-driven strategies resonated deeply with my interests. Blair's insights into the importance of collaboration, creative storytelling with data, and ethical data usage illuminated the multifaceted nature of marketing in the digital age.

The most important lesson I learned from this seminar series is the significance of building meaningful connections and fostering relationships within the industry. Networking isn't just about exchanging business cards or LinkedIn connections; it's about cultivating genuine relationships built on trust, mutual respect, and shared interests. In today's competitive job market, the value of a strong professional network cannot be overstated—it opens doors to opportunities, provides mentorship, and facilitates career growth.

Network and Resources:

Throughout the semester, I proactively engaged in networking activities, leveraging various resources to expand my professional circle and enhance my job prospects in the marketing industry. Here's a glimpse into my networking journey:

?

  • I actively networked with fellow classmates, guest speakers, and industry professionals during and after each seminar as well, exchanging contact information and engaging in meaningful conversations about our shared interests and career goals.
  • Attending industry events, workshops, and conferences provided valuable opportunities to connect with industry leaders, gain insights into emerging trends, and expand my knowledge base. These events not only enriched my understanding of the marketing landscape but also helped me forge valuable connections with potential employers and collaborators.
  • Joining relevant LinkedIn groups and online communities allowed me to stay updated on industry news, job opportunities, and networking events. Engaging in discussions, sharing insights, and connecting with like-minded professionals helped me establish a strong online presence and expand my professional network.
  • Volunteering for industry-related initiatives and projects provided me with hands-on experience, valuable skills, and an opportunity to network with industry professionals. Whether assisting with event coordination or contributing to marketing campaigns, volunteering allowed me to showcase my abilities and build relationships with potential employers.
  • Exploring job-finding resources such as online job boards, career fairs, and company websites helped me identify potential job opportunities and gain insights into hiring trends in the marketing industry. Utilizing these resources strategically, I tailored my job search strategy and focused on positions that aligned with my skills and career objectives.
  • Keeping in contact with my network is crucial for maintaining relationships and staying top-of-mind with potential employers. Whether through regular emails, LinkedIn messages, or attending industry events, I strive to nurture my connections and seek opportunities for collaboration and mentorship.
  • As I prepare for my Co-Op placement, networking has played a significant role in my job search process. By leveraging my professional network and attending career fairs and networking events, I've been able to explore various opportunities and secure interviews with potential employers. While networking isn't the sole factor in securing a Co-Op position, it has undoubtedly opened doors and facilitated introductions that have advanced my job search efforts.
