Exploring Innovative Solutions for Elderly People Ageing at Home
The Room Xchange
The Room Xchange is Australia's first and only verified house-sharing platform.
As our population ages, more adult children are expressing concerns about their elderly parents living alone. While the desire for independence remains strong among our seniors, the reality of their needs—such as medication reminders and companionship—presents a growing challenge.
Many families are exploring the concept of offering a rent offset in exchange for nighttime presence and light responsibilities, such as meal preparation and medication reminders. However, the complexity of these needs, particularly when early onset dementia is involved, calls for a more structured approach.
The Challenge
While NDIS support is available, the packages are often limited and funds cannot be used to ensure someone is present in the home at night. This gap in support is becoming increasingly apparent and it's a problem that will only grow as more elderly individuals choose to age in place.
The Opportunity
Interestingly, a significant number of Australia's unused spare bedrooms are located in the homes of the elderly. According to the World Health Organisation, by 2050, the global population of individuals aged 60 and over is expected to reach 2 billion, doubling from 2019. In Australia, around 90% of seniors express a preference to age in their own homes, as reported by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare. This highlights the urgent need for innovative home care solutions.
The Solution?
Could a partnership with an NDIS-type organisation be the key? By collaborating with such organisations, we could provide accredited aged care workers who are also in need of affordable accommodation. This would create a mutually beneficial arrangement, where workers gain a place to live and elderly individuals receive the support they need.
