?? Speaker Spotlight: Andrea Rossi - Computational Design and Digital Fabrication Researcher

Andrea Rossi is a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Kassel, specializing in computational design and digital fabrication. His work focuses on making biomaterials research accessible for product development in the AEC industry. At the Rhino User Meeting, Andrea will discuss the evolving role of interfaces in design, extending beyond conventional CAD models to explore software, machine, and material interfaces, particularly in biofabrication.

Join us to delve into how design interfaces can be expanded and how they can push the boundaries of what's possible in the AEC industry.

?

?? Meet the Expert:

"I am a computational design and digital fabrication researcher, as well as a consultant on the same topics. I currently work as a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Kassel, where I work on a project focused on upscaling biomaterials research in order to make it accessible for developing products for the AEC industry."

?? What I'll Be Sharing:

"In the event, I will speak about the role interfaces play in the development of design. I will try to take the concept of interface and extend it beyond conventional CAD models, and talk about open software interfaces, design-to-fabrication machine interfaces, and material interfaces in relation to research on biofabrication. Rhino forms the basis of most of the work I do, and I believe the topic is relevant to think where the limits of current interfaces are, and how they could be extended."

?? My Journey with Rhino:

"I started very long ago during my studies at Politecnico di Milano. I further deepened the work with it in my master, and finally ended up developing Wasp, a Grasshopper plug-in for combinatorial design, during my PhD at TU Darmstadt. Wasp has been possible thanks to the accessible nature of the Rhino interfaces, and it allowed making combinatorial design logics accessible to a wide audience. Besides that, most of the digital fabrication projects I worked on rely heavily on the accessible interfaces provided by Grasshopper to develop computational design logics."

?? What's Shaping the Future:

"I have always been very excited about any development which aims at making design knowledge more open and accessible. For sure, I am very excited about several DIY projects in the field of biomaterials, digital fabrication, and robotics. And I am still waiting to see how the recent AI developments might impact such areas, making expert knowledge more widely available and accessible. To this day, I think Rhino still remains a vital part of the research I am involved in, thanks to its ability to combine precise modeling with a variety of performance, fabrication, and computing tools. I am excited to see how this will integrate further into more complex networks of tools out there, as developments such as Rhino.Inside and Rhino.Compute are making possible."

?? What I'm Looking Forward To:

"I am very excited to meet and exchange with the wider community, and find novel connections and projects to develop this ecosystem further and more openly. I hope to leave attendees with some doubts and questions about what really is a design interface, and how we can push our tools to do more for us and enable more open design strategies."

?? A Fun Fact About Me:

"I always find it funny when I receive emails related to Wasp which address the 'Wasp Support Team,' as if there is a large software team behind the tool :) I think it talks a lot about the mismatch between expectations and reality in the context of developing free open-source tools in AEC."
