Exploring Innovations at IBM TechXchange 2024
From October 21st to 24th, 2024, Las Vegas became the epicenter of technological advancement as IBM hosted its annual TechXchange conference. This year's event brought together thousands of developers, engineers, IT professionals, and industry leaders to explore the latest innovations in technology and their implications for businesses and society. I got the invite from OpenPOWER Foundation team to be part of the event
Overall Key Highlights
IBM TechXchange 2024 was not just a conference; it was a celebration of innovation and collaboration. As the event concluded, participants left with new insights, enhanced skills, and a renewed commitment to leveraging technology for positive change. The spirit of Las Vegas, combined with IBM’s visionary approach, set the stage for a future where technology drives meaningful progress for businesses and society alike.
As we reflect on this inspiring event, the excitement for what lies ahead in the tech world is palpable, and the connections made at TechXchange will undoubtedly pave the way for future innovations.
My primary focus was to appreciate the team who is working to build OpenPOWER based System using OpenPOWER cores. Solid silicon team presented their product features which will be available in a year from now.
I want to Acknowledge #Solidsilicon - the team working on building OpenPOWER-based systems, especially with OpenPOWER cores, is important as it highlights the dedication and expertise involved. With a solid roadmap and the promise of product features rolling out in the next year, it seems like there's significant momentum in expanding open-source hardware capabilities
#Solidsilicon focusing on several planned releases and initiatives. Here’s a breakdown of what they plan to release or achieve:
1. Solid Silicon’s Self-Sovereign Chips:
Objective: Solid Silicon aims to introduce self-sovereign chips that give enterprises full ownership and control over their infrastructure. This approach involves releasing open-source chips with open firmware, tools, and keys, allowing organizations to maintain and secure their infrastructure independently.
Key Features of the Chips:Active Root of Trust: To enhance security.Integrated Baseboard Management Controller (BMC): For improved management.Quad Solid Silicon I Open Firmware: Allows custom modifications and maintenance.OpenPOWER CPU cores built on the POWER ISA, which are more open and customizable than proprietary chips.
2. X-Class Chips for IoT and BMC Applications:
Objective: These chips are being designed for simpler lifecycle management in IoT (Internet of Things) and BMC (Baseboard Management Controller) scenarios.
Key Features:Secure OpenPOWER CPU Cores: Ensuring data security and efficient performance.
Multiple Connectivity Options: Including PCIe 2.0, DisplayPort, RGMII, I2C, SPI, and more.
Embedded FPGA: Integrating Lattice ECPS and iCE40 FPGAs for customizations.
3. Hyper-scale Memory Systems:
Objective: Focusing on supporting hyperscale memory applications with systems capable of supporting up to 32TB of DDR5 memory. This is aimed at high-performance computing environments and data-intensive workloads.
In summary, the main releases and initiatives revolve around open-source, self-sovereign hardware solutions, ensuring high standards with certification, broadening software compatibility, and driving high-capacity systems to support modern workloads.
I also want to mention about the where I did spent good amount of time - IBM Storage Fusion HCI which uses enterprise-grade hardware, including storage-rich servers and network hardware, and OpenShift, a hybrid cloud application platform powered by Kubernetes, on bare metal using the Red Hat CoreOS operating system. This flexible and scalable storage solution offers enhanced cyber resilience.
IBM also demonstrated important developments in AI and emphasizing useful applications for a range of sectors. IBM WatsonX, a suite that allows customers to create, train, and implement AI models more effectively and customisably, was one of the key topics. With features like WatsonX.data for scalable data processing, WatsonX.ai for model training, and WatsonX.governance to guarantee reliable and compliant AI models, WatsonX is designed with data scientists and business users in mind. By streamlining model construction, these technologies hope to improve operational efficiency, enable ethical AI adoption, and make it simpler to train AI on particular organizational data.

3 周Thanks for sharing the details about IBM TechXchange 2024. We are sure IBM TechXchange showcased innovations across AI, cloud, quantum computing, and sustainability, highlighting hands-on labs, networking, and ethical tech. Attendees saw presentations on the future of digital transformation, practical workshops on AI and cybersecurity, and solutions for responsible AI. Solid Silicon emphasized self-sovereign #OpenPOWER-based chips and planned releases like X-Class for #IoT and hyperscale memory systems. IBM Storage Fusion HCI and the #WatsonX suite—enabling scalable, compliant #AI for enterprise use—were also central, promoting a future of resilient, adaptable tech infrastructure.
https://www.businessinsider.in/artificial-intelligence/news/mark-zuckerberg-flexes-that-metas-cluster-of-nvidia-h100-chips-is-bigger-than-the-competition/amp_articleshow/114826616.cms This is recent ongoing discussion where Reliance plans to leverage LLAMA4 for LLM open source. Meta, Colossus etc are using 100,000 GPU's to train data which comes at price with power efficiency, performance, low latency & cost. Our LLC can also build indigenous chip with Data Processing Unit or leverage Custom ASIC with core application on 7nm node to train DL/ML AI hardware. The new ask apparently is to join India Mobile Congress effort with 6G that help build IOT Edge Datacenter similar to likes of AWS Outpost over Crude Datacenter. Reliance & Adani are currently issuing tenders on owning Datacenter unlike Nippon & Doccomo Telecom who have secure servers established for Indian Gov & Retail. Its going to be huge investment in the masses that cannot be passed upon in emerging market. India is trending high on Digital & Hapuus Mango has leveraged digitalization with State Bank of India. We are ambitious on creating our own wallet , coin & exchange for barter of goods & commodities based on GST exemption. HBM3 appears sound & scalable .
Ganesan, this is good stuff with IBM on Power11 vision but any reason DDR5 over HBM3. Is HBM3 validated over DDR5 in memory validation pool? DDR5 has SBE in MRC & HBM3 will also have its issues with bit errors based on bandwidth, speed & latency for AI work load. Anyone work ongoing in that area ?
