In today's talks about technology and artificial intelligence (AI), there is this idea called "singularity." It is the moment when machines become smarter than humans. Think of it like those sci-fi movies where robots become self-aware and want to take over the world. Now, I am not saying that is what is going to happen, but imagine a point where a machine can make decisions all by itself – not just crunch numbers but also think and feel like a person.?
Let's say we put a robot in a tough spot, like a medical emergency, between saving a mom or her unborn baby. If the robot can make that call on its own, without any pre-programmed rules, that is the singularity. It means robots are not just smart; they are aware of themselves and the world around them. They can make choices about life, love, and everything else just like we do.?
But here's where things get interesting. If machines can think and feel, what does that mean for us? Do they want to take over and rule the world? Well but it depends on the robot. It is like asking if your toaster wants to make breakfast for you – probably not, right? But when it comes to robots with super-smarts and feelings, who knows??

So, what is the big deal? Why does it matter if machines get smarter than us? Well, it changes everything about how we live and work. If robots can make their own choices, we need to make sure they make the right ones. That means setting up rules and making sure they follow them. There is a very practical and present dilemma that can be revived from the British moral philosopher Phillipa Foot writing in 1967 called The Trolley problem: A tram is running down a track and is out control. If it continues on its course unchecked and undiverted, it will run over five people who can't get off of the tracks in time. You have the chance to divert it onto another track simply by pulling a lever.?If you do this, though, the tram will kill a man who happens to be standing on this other track. But how do you feel if it is updated: your self-driving car "sees" a group of children crossing suddenly in front of your moving car that is traveling at a high but legal speed. Should the "robot" divert the car into a wall, probably killing you, or go forward and kill the children if these are the only choices available.
