Imagine a gathering where innovation, technology, and the betterment of humanity are at the forefront; where professionals and students come together to explore the latest developments in science and technology. This is what I recently experienced at my inaugural IEEE AFRICON conference. In this article, I'll share insights about IEEE, AFRICON, my takeaways, and why you should attend the next one, especially if you're in the engineering field.

Understanding IEEE: A Global Technological Powerhouse

Let's start by getting to know IEEE. It's a global force dedicated to advancing innovation and technological excellence. IEEE serves both professionals and students across a wide range of science and technology fields. For more information or membership details, visit their website here https://www.ieee.org/, IEEE .

AFRICON: Where Innovation Meets Africa

Now, let's focus on AFRICON. AFRICON is the flagship conference of IEEE Region 8 in Africa, providing a platform for professionals worldwide to share ideas, research, and network. The conference covers various IEEE fields and takes place every two years. The 16th IEEE AFRICON 2023 was hosted by the IEEE Kenya Section at the Kenya School of Monetary Studies in Nairobi, under the theme "Advancing Technology in Africa Towards Global Presence."

How was it?

The event was impeccably organized with a remarkable turnout. It was graced by the current IEEE president and CEO Saifur Rahman and put together by a team under the phenomenal IEEE Kenya Section Chairperson Esther Muchiri. Talks and presentations addressed emerging tech issues in Africa, highlighting challenges and opportunities. I had the privilege of meeting familiar faces Brighton Kithendu, Lydiah Sikinyi, Naisenya Mungai, Brenda Rombo and engaging with professors like Kelly McKenna, Nelson Ijumba, Anna Wilbik and Heinrich Laue who left a profound impact with their interests and knowledge.

Venturing into conference rooms, I found panels of esteemed professors scrutinizing papers from brilliant minds globally. It was a hub of intellectual exchange and exploration, enriching my knowledge and perspectives.

Why Attend IEEE AFRICON?

Wondering why you should attend? Here are some compelling reasons:

  1. Networking: Regardless of your sector, this conference is a treasure trove for networking with industry professionals.
  2. Access to Research: It's a valuable resource for staying updated with industry studies and trends.
  3. Intellectual Growth: AFRICON challenges your knowledge, allowing you to engage with ongoing studies and showcase your expertise. You might even find potential partners among organizations like IBM Research Africa, the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum (Kenya), and Nokia Kenya.
