Exploring the Hybrid Career Path on Purpose!

Hello Purpose-seekers,

I usually aim to send my newsletter on Wednesdays, but sometimes life gets busy, and it doesn’t happen as planned. Staying connected with you through these letters is important to me, and knowing that some of you look forward to reading them truly motivates me to carve out the time—no matter what!

Today, I want to share something that recently struck a chord. I reconnected with a former colleague from Accenture, who, like me, spent many successful years with the company. After 17 years of impressive achievements, he was naturally inclined to pursue another high-profile role—this time at Boston Consulting. But something stopped him—a small inner voice telling him this wasn’t what he truly wanted. Despite being able to secure another prestigious position, he realised it wouldn’t bring the energy or passion he was seeking.

For the first time, he paused. He reflected, engaged in introspection, and worked with a coach to discover his next step. What he found was that making an impact, feeling fulfilled, and having a sense of purpose had become his top priorities. The title and salary weren’t as important as finding meaning in his work. Now, he’s building something of his own—something he’s truly passionate about. While I can’t share the details just yet, I can tell you it’s going to be an incredible project for those of us in our late 30s and early 40s, who want more than just helping large corporations make money.

This conversation resonated deeply with me because it mirrors my own journey. We talked about the concept of a hybrid career—something many of us are embracing today. As many of you know, I juggle several ventures: my coaching program , two construction-related businesses, NC SLATER JOINERY and SLATER STEEL , and importing handmade Zellige tiles from Morocco to Australia with ZELLAUS . I thrive on this balance, but it’s not just about being busy—it’s about being busy with purpose.

I wouldn’t call myself a full-time coach, even though coaching is a major part of my life. About a third of my time is dedicated to coaching, another third to my construction businesses, and the last third is reserved for personal development, family, and the things I didn’t have time for during my corporate days. Of course, these “thirds” don’t always split perfectly—some weeks my coaching takes centre stage, while other weeks it’s Zellige tiles or construction projects. But over time, it balances out.

This hybrid approach allows me to live with purpose across different areas, and I believe more people should consider it. Often, we’re not drawn to just one thing. We find fulfilment in multiple areas, and that’s okay. For some, a hybrid career might be a stepping stone to something more defined; for others, it’s exactly where they’re meant to be. And even when we think we’ve found our ideal career, things can evolve. As we grow, our purpose shifts too.

So, my advice? Embrace the hybrid career. It allows for flexibility, growth, and the ability to pursue multiple passions. Whether you’re an entrepreneur funding projects through consulting or exploring new interests while keeping a stable job, a hybrid career gives you the freedom to shape your path.

Let’s keep seeking purpose, evolving, and finding meaning in every step.
