Exploring Hidden Gems in the World of Wine
The term "Hidden Gems" refers to those rare, undiscovered treasures that the wine connoisseur seeks to find. These gems are often a revelation, breaking the mold of clichés associated with particular regions and offering an exciting alternative. They can be defined by various factors, including terroir, quality, and the influence of new generations of winemakers. In this article, we will delve into the allure of discovering these lesser-known wine regions and unique wines, their significance in the wine world, and the joy they bring to wine enthusiasts.
Hidden Gem Wine Regions
Exploring up-and-coming wine regions
The wine world is dynamic, with new regions gaining recognition. Terroir, the unique combination of soil, climate, and terrain, is a defining characteristic of hidden gem wine regions. As climate change opens up previously untapped possibilities for grape cultivation, we're witnessing the emergence of exciting new regions.?
One such hidden gem is Corsica, a small island south of France. Long overshadowed by the classic regions in mainland France, Corsica is now making a proud name for itself with its distinctive terroir and the passion of local winemakers, led by Sant’Armettu, now featured on WineChain.?
Antoine Pétrus, a world-renowned Sommelier and Meilleur Ouvrier de France, highlighted Corsica's potential, further emphasizing the value of discovering these hidden gems.
“Corsica used to make very dark, very rich, very spicy reds—and whites which could age very quickly and could be oxidized a little bit. My own view from Corsica for WineChain is that we try to find the opposite—(for) reds, very clear, balanced with soft mild tannins, and not too rich or concentrated. When I'm looking for the whites, I want something very fresh, very supple with heightened minerality, a lot of perfume, and not too oaky.” Antoine Pétrus
Newcomers Making Waves in Classic Regions
The Overachievers in the World of Wine
For decades, certain regions have dominated the wine market. The land in these regions is often scarce and expensive. The value for the prized terroir, combined with following in the footsteps of the world’s most iconic wineries, makes it hard for new producers to get a foot in the door, let alone rise to the quality and status of their more established neighbors. Through grit, resourcefulness, and passion, some of these new wineries break through to produce wines of exceptional quality, demanding our attention. Two wineries on the WineChain platform stand out. Their journey exemplifies the importance of pioneering spirits: Domaine Bott and Champagne Secret.?
After carefully tending to the vineyard for only a couple of vintages, Julie & Graeme Bott, of Domaine Bott, managed to produce a beautiful wine, mirroring the quality from the most famous wineries of the region. Now in their 6th vintage, collectors are able to experience where they started and where they are now via a journey in the glass. Champagne Secret is an independent brand whose creators choose to stay anonymous to allow wine lovers to sip on exceptional Champagne, free from any presumptions of what's in the glass.
Passing the Torch
Wineries passed from one generation to the next
In many cases, family legacies continue as wineries and vineyards are handed down from one generation to the next. The transfer of knowledge, tradition, and vineyard secrets adds depth to the winemaking process. The younger generation often infuses their own creativity and style, creating an intriguing blend of the old and the new. We showcase wineries where this transition is a captivating journey. These success stories illustrate the dynamic evolution of winemaking traditions and the promise of the future. Domaine Barmès-Buecher, based in Alsace’s village of Wettolsheim, is a perfect example of this. The course was set by the late Fran?ois Barmès, a fierce advocate for the practice of biodynamic farming. Today his vision is carried on, even amplified, by his wife Geneviève, son Maxime, and daughter Sophie.?
