Exploring Frontiers in Neurotechnology and Brain Health at the AI for Good Global Summit
AI for Good
The Leading UN Platform on AI – Global Summit 2025: July 8-11 | Geneva, Switzerland
Neurotechnology has the potential to transform mental health care and address neurological disorders. This promising field was one of the highlights at the Frontier stage of the 2024 AI for Good Global Summit , where a panel of experts delved into its transformative capabilities. The session, moderated by Dr. Saurabh Bhaskar Shaw, PhD , Adjunct Research Professor at Western University and Co-Founder of PropelFocus, featured groundbreaking presentations from Maria Lopez Valdes, PhD. , CEO and Co-Founder of Bitbrain, Ramses Alcaide , Chief Executive Officer of Neurable, and Tracy Brandmeyer , Chief Scientific Officer of BrainMind.
The Promise of Neurotechnology
Opening the session, Dr. Saurabh Bhaskar Shaw emphasized the intricate dance of brain networks that underlie our everyday tasks and the challenges faced by individuals with PTSD and ADHD. He explained how our brains naturally switch between different modes of thought, such as focusing on daily tasks and reflecting on personal experiences. This seamless switching is crucial for healthy cognitive function. However, in individuals with PTSD, this process can be significantly disrupted, leading to difficulties in managing thoughts and emotions.
Dr. Shaw's research has focused on identifying these brain network activities using electroencephalography (EEG) instead of the more cumbersome and expensive functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). By employing AI models to predict fMRI network activity through EEG, Dr. Shaw's work has shown promising results in PTSD therapy. "We found that this kind of a therapy led to a 36% reduction in PTSD symptom severity," he shared, underscoring the potential impact of these advancements on trauma treatment. PropelFocus, a system designed to assist individuals with ADHD in improving productivity, was also introduced, showcasing how AI and computer vision can help optimize daily schedules and enhance focus.
Ethical and Responsible Innovation
Dr. Tracy Brandmeyer, a neuroscientist and Chief Scientific Officer at BrainMind, spoke about the organization’s role in catalyzing responsible advancement of personalized neurotechnology. She explained that BrainMind functions as a private ecosystem, uniting the world's leading neuroscientists, technologists, ethicists, entrepreneurs, investors, and philanthropists to accelerate and responsibly scale neurotech breakthroughs. One of BrainMind’s main focus is personalized neurotechnology for mental health and wellness.
Brandmeyer highlighted the importance of ethical development in neurotechnology, particularly in protecting brain data privacy and ensuring access and equity.
"We firmly believe that responsible technology development will help align stakeholders around core ethical principles," she stated.
She provided examples of how BrainMind supports startupsin in integrating ethical practices and achieving successful commercialization of their products.
Accessible Solutions for Neurological Disorders
Dr. María López Valdés, CEO and Co-Founder of Bitbrain, addressed the global impact of neurological disorders, emphasizing the need for accessible and affordable neurotechnology.
"43% of the global population will develop some neurological disorder during their lifetime," she stated, highlighting the urgency of the issue.
Bitbrain has developed Elevvo, a neuro headband designed to provide reliable and user-friendly brain monitoring and diagnostic capabilities.
Dr. López Valdés demonstrated the simplicity and effectiveness of the Elevvo platform, which uses AI algorithms to enhance diagnostic accuracy and personalize treatments.
"I really believe that this kind of solutions will provide us global health access for anybody, anywhere, and anytime," she asserted.
By reducing the complexity and cost of neurotechnology, Bitbrain aims to make brain health care more accessible worldwide.
Revolutionizing Brain-Computer Interfaces
Dr. Ramses Alcaide, CEO of Neurable, showcased the MW75 Neuro, a pair of headphones capable of tracking brain activity related to focus and attention. Neurable's technology aims to provide robust, high-quality brain data in a consumer-friendly format.
During a live demonstration, Alcaide illustrated how the MW75 Neuro headphones could track his focus in real-time. "You can see the line going down as I get distracted, now I'm going to start focusing on these numbers...and you can see that the line goes up," he explained. This innovation has far-reaching implications for mental health and everyday productivity, offering practical applications for both medical and consumer markets.
Neurable has collected data from nearly 7,000 people and found significant applications for their technology. For example, their data revealed a distinct difference in how individuals with ADHD handle reading tasks compared to neurotypical individuals. This insight highlights the potential of the MW75 Neuro headphones to aid in diagnosing and managing conditions like ADHD.
Moreover, Neurable's collaboration with existing headphone companies exemplifies their strategy to integrate advanced neurotechnology into everyday devices, aiming to make brain insights accessible to consumers and providing feedback on focus, attention, and brain health directly through their phones.
Democratizing Neurotechnology
The session concluded with a Q&A segment, where the speakers discussed the democratization of neurotechnology and its ethical implications. Dr. Alcaide emphasized Neurable’s mission, stating:
"Ddemocratizing the incredible technology that's been in labs and bringing it out to the masses, that's [Neurable’s] ethos."
Dr, López Valdés highlighted the evolution of Bitbrain's EEG devices from complex research tools to accessible consumer products. "We decided to develop still research-oriented EEG devices but easier and faster to use," she said, noting the potential for these technologies to make brain health care more widely available.
Dr. Brandmeyer addressed the ethical challenges in scaling neurotechnology, particularly in protecting brain data and ensuring equitable access.
"The privacy and protection of brain data is absolutely central to the successful scaling of neurotechnologies," she asserted.
By embedding ethical practices into the core development of neurotech companies, organizations like BrainMind are paving the way for responsible innovation.
A Future of Possibilities
The advancements in neurotechnology presented during this AI for Good Global Summit session underscore a future where mental health care and the diagnosis of neurological disorders could be revolutionized. From AI-enhanced EEG diagnostics to consumer-friendly brain-machine interfaces, these innovations hold the promise of more accessible, effective, and ethical solutions.
As the session highlighted, collaboration among researchers, technologists, ethicists, and entrepreneurs is crucial in realizing this potential. By democratizing neurotechnology and embedding ethical considerations into its development, we can ensure that these breakthroughs benefit humanity. The work of Bitbrain, Neurable, BrainMind, and PropelFocus exemplifies how the integration of AI and neurotechnology can lead to significant advancements in brain health, ultimately improving the lives of millions around the world.
