IMO authenticity is key. Don't follow a trend if it doesn't speak to you. And while it's interesting to logically see what behaviors might be better favored by algorithms staying true to your voice is the most important thing. Engagement is a only a number. It's the real relationships you build via social media that are important - something no engagement rate will be able to quantify.
