For quantum computers to be useful for applications like simulating quantum systems, discovering exotic states of matter or learning new experiment design, researchers have to solve a series of technical problems. Current quantum computers are too small to represent real-world applications. Hewlett Packard Labs is tackling this challenge by developing a distributed quantum simulation framework called adaptive circuit knitting. In the latest installment of our “Get to Know the Innovator” series, we’re celebrating Nigel Edwards, an HPE Fellow, Vice President and Director of Hewlett Packard Labs’ Security Lab. Here is a look at Nigel’s career and his thoughts on innovation. ?????????? ?????? ?????????????????? Raised in Plymouth, U.K., and with a PhD from the University of Bristol, Nigel joined Hewlett Packard Labs in Bristol in 1988. His career had a major inflection point in the early 1990s when he became acquainted with a project called the World Wide Web at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (known as CERN). He ported CERN’s software to HP’s Unix operating system, HP-UX, providing the patches back to CERN. It quickly became apparent that to unlock the full potential of this new technology, security was going to be really important. Furthermore, industry-wide collaboration would be needed to put in place the foundational software and protocol building blocks. That set the path for the next three decades of Nigel’s career. ???????? ???????????????????? ???????????????? ?????? ?????? ???????????? ???? ??????????? “How do you measure the integrity of a complete IT system, including the hardware software and firmware, to ensure it will behave as intended rather than execute hidden malicious code? That is the problem that drives my work. As an industry, we’ve not paid enough attention to design systems which are measurable and verifiable. We need to take a hardware-software co-design approach. Hardware provides the foundations on which our software is deployed to deliver services. We know how to build hardware which securely initializes itself, so that it starts in a known-good verifiable state. Extending that trust up the stack from the hardware through the complex layers of firmware, hypervisors, operating systems and applications is hard. Attackers are extremely skilled at subverting the linkages in that chain to compromise systems to run malicious code.” ?????? ???? ???????? ???????? ??????????????????? “Our interconnected world gives us benefits that a few decades ago would have been in the realm of science fiction. Unfortunately, it also gives malicious actors in the form of cybercriminals and hostile nation-state agencies a multitude of opportunities or 'attack vectors.' Effectively addressing the threats posed by these actors requires industry-wide collaboration on hardware capabilities, security services and protocols. History demonstrates that fragmentation in which different component providers go in their own direction leads to niche features and services which have minimal impact on improving system security. So my team and I spend a lot of time working with industry partners and suppliers in cross-industry collaborations. We do this in a variety of forums including open-source projects and standards organizations. Our objective is to put in place common hardware capabilities, security services and protocols to make the world more secure.”

Neuromorphic computing is emerging as an innovative way for computers to work more efficiently, like human brains, to help systems keep up with demands of #AI. Labs is doing research in this field.
