Dear LinkedIn Community,
As we continue our journey along the enchanting Douro River, this month, we're casting the spotlight on a hidden gem – Barca de Alva. Nestled at the confluence of the águeda River and the majestic Douro, this village is a testament to natural beauty and rich history.
A Sanctuary for Nature Enthusiasts
Barca de Alva finds itself in the embrace of the Natural Park of the International Douro. Its Mediterranean climate creates an ideal habitat for a diverse range of bird species. From the iconic Egyptian vultures and griffon vultures to the majestic royal eagles and Short-toed Snake-eagles, the skies here are alive with wings of wonder. Bird watchers can also catch glimpses of the elusive Oenanthe leucura, among other feathered friends. Nightingales, swallows, and Eurasian Golden-Orioles add their melodious notes to this symphony of nature.
A Village Rich in Heritage
With a population of around 150 inhabitants, Barca de Alva has a captivating history. Once a bustling hub thanks to its railway station and customs house, the village has evolved. Today, it thrives on agriculture and is experiencing a resurgence in tourism, particularly with the arrival of cruise ships like ours. The closure of the railway station and customs house in the late 1980s and early 1990s reshaped the village's identity. It was once a hotbed for smuggling, where daring individuals crossed borders under the cloak of darkness to bring back goods they couldn't obtain locally. The customs guards, on both sides of the border, played a cat-and-mouse game with these resourceful families.
Engineering Marvel: Almirante Sarmento Rodrigues Bridge
A jewel in the village's crown is the Almirante Sarmento Rodrigues Bridge. This bridge, constructed in 1955 by the Portuguese engineer Edgar Cardoso, is a testament to human ingenuity. It's not just any bridge; it's the first reinforced concrete bridge to span the Douro River. Its presence is a symbol of progress and connectivity in this picturesque corner of the world.
Barca de Alva is more than just a stop along our journey; it's a testament to the resilience of communities and the breathtaking beauty of the Douro region. As we explore this charming village, we invite you to join us in celebrating its unique blend of natural wonders and historical significance.
Stay tuned for more updates, and as always, we look forward to sharing our Douro River experiences with you.
Warm regards,
