?? The MIT study challenges earlier predictions about AI-driven job automation.
While previous estimates from organizations like Goldman Sachs, McKinsey, and various universities indicated significant automation potential, the MIT study focused specifically on the economic feasibility of automating jobs requiring visual analysis.
It found that the majority of these jobs are not yet economically beneficial to automate. The study calculated the costs of deploying and maintaining AI systems, revealing that only a small fraction of wages for vision tasks would justify automation. The researchers also considered more affordable, self-hosted AI systems but found that many jobs still wouldn't be cost-effective to automate.
They emphasized that the transition to AI automation in certain tasks will take decades and acknowledged limitations such as not considering AI's role in augmenting human labor.
The study also addressed potential bias concerns due to funding from the MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab. Finally, it advised policymakers to prepare for AI job automation and highlighted the need for AI developers to focus on reducing costs and expanding the scope of AI deployment.
