Exploring AI's Future: Insights from the Google Cloud Learning Expedition in Zurich
Recently, I had the privilege of attending the Zurich Learning Expedition hosted by Google Cloud. This event was a deep dive into the cutting-edge AI innovations shaping the Swiss economy and beyond, featuring insightful discussions from top AI leaders and innovators.
Urs H?lzle, Google employee #8, and a pioneer behind Google's technical infrastructure, provided a compelling overview of AI's evolution. From the Internet and mobile to AI, he underscored how these technological waves have transformed industries. Highlighting Google's advancements like BERT, AlphaGo, and AlphaFold, he illustrated AI's profound impact on search, protein folding, and even weather forecasting. Despite AI's potential, he noted that over 60% of enterprises are still in the pilot phase, with less than 10% deploying AI at scale, emphasizing the need for strategic, data-first approaches.
Thomas Cliett's session on "What is Predictive & Generative AI?" was particularly enlightening. He differentiated between predictive AI, which analyzes data for decision-making, and generative AI, which creates new content. His insights into transformers and their role in enhancing language understanding were invaluable, especially the emphasis on prompt engineering and managing AI-generated inaccuracies.
We also heard from Raphael von Thiessen on how AI is revolutionizing public services in Zurich, from train schedules to healthcare, showcasing the practical applications of AI in enhancing efficiency and privacy. Christian Most's discussion on AI in Swiss Air's flight management highlighted the complexity of integrating AI with legacy systems and the importance of timely, accurate decisions in the airline industry.

ETH Zurich and EPFL have launched the “Swiss AI Initiative” with Nvidia to establish Switzerland as a leading hub for transparent and reliable AI, supported by the new Alps supercomputer. This initiative aims to develop new AI models for various industries, ensuring ethical, transparent, and open-source AI development to enhance Switzerland's digital sovereignty and competitiveness.
The visit to ETH Zurich, renowned for its technological advancements, was a highlight. Learning about their supercomputer with 10,000 Nvidia GPUs and hearing from distinguished alumni like Philippe Kahn on the innovative journey of technology founders was truly inspiring. Kahn, an ETH Zurich alumnus and talented technologist, made history by sending the first photo from his phone on the same day his daughter was born. This innovative act marked the beginning of mobile photography, showcasing Kahn's knack for merging necessity with creativity.
Overall, the Zurich Learning Expedition was a testament to AI's transformative power and the importance of strategic implementation. I'm excited to apply these insights and drive innovation in our ongoing projects, especially in our #ABBAccelerator happening next week in Krakow where teams across ABB are gathering to drive business value through prioritised use cases, many of which will accelerate our AI ambitions.
