In this last and final article of the five-part series on the fundamental skills needed to succeed as Executive Assistants, I would like to talk about the importance of the role Corporate Culture plays. This is arguably one of the most misconstrued aspects of any organization for that matter.
For the uninitiated, please feel free to check out the earlier published ones via the below links.
When we ask the question, “What is the corporate culture in your organization?” more often than not, we come across subjective thoughts rather than objective reasons. This happens to people who cut across experiences and designations. I feel the reason for this is that people being people, cannot operate strictly as per a coded corporate culture policy document, even assuming such policies existed in the first place. Corporate culture is a powerful force that shapes the identity, values, and behaviours of an organization.
Hence, with the subjectivity surrounding aspects of corporate culture, I feel it is imperative to set aside unlocking the codes of corporate culture and delve into important aspects of how to approach aligning yourself with the culture of the organization you are a part of and using that to your advantage, whatever the culture of your company might be.
Exploring Corporate Cultures within Organizations
Corporate culture is a complex tapestry that is woven by various factors, including national, regional, and industry-specific influences. As an aspiring executive assistant, understanding these different cultural aspects is crucial for navigating the dynamics of the organizations you work for. Let's explore the key aspects that will serve as a guide on this journey.
Understanding National Cultural Aspects
Every nation has its unique cultural identity, which significantly influences organizational values and practices. Take the time to familiarize yourself with the national culture of the organization you are a part of or aspire to join. Recognize the values, beliefs, and communication styles that are prevalent within that culture. This understanding will help you align your approach and better connect with colleagues and stakeholders.
Regional or State-Wise Cultural Aspects
In addition to national culture, regional or state-wise cultural nuances can shape corporate cultures within organizations. These localized influences may reflect in the way people interact, their work preferences, and even their decision-making processes. By exploring and appreciating these regional cultural aspects, you can build stronger relationships and adapt your strategies accordingly.
Culture of Conducting Business
Each organization has its own unique way of conducting business, that is deeply rooted in its culture. This includes the unwritten rules, norms, and rituals that govern daily operations. Take the time to observe and understand the specific cultural practices within your organization. Are there preferred communication channels or protocols for decision-making? Are there specific etiquettes for meetings or presentations? Adapting to and embracing these cultural practices will enhance your effectiveness as an executive assistant.
Embracing Corporate Culture as a Part of Learning and Alignment
Corporate culture plays a significant role in shaping the identity and operations of an organization. As an aspiring executive assistant, it is essential to embrace and align with the corporate culture to thrive in your role. In this section, we will explore the key sub-items that will serve as a guide to help you navigate and adapt to the cultural landscape within the organization.

Communication
Effective communication is at the heart of any successful organization. To align with the corporate culture, it is crucial to adapt your communication style to match the organization's norms and preferences. Observe how colleagues and leaders communicate, whether it's through formal channels or more informal interactions. Pay attention to the language used, the tone of communication, and the level of formality. By adapting your communication style to align with the cultural norms, you can foster better understanding and collaboration.
Assumptions
Our assumptions and biases can sometimes hinder our ability to fully understand and embrace corporate culture. It is important to be self-aware and identify any preconceived notions or biases that may cloud your perception. Challenge these assumptions and approach the organization's culture with an open mind. Embrace diversity and seek to understand different perspectives, as this will not only enhance your cultural alignment but also contribute to a more inclusive work environment.
Rules and Norms
Every organization has its own set of unwritten rules and norms that govern behaviour. Take the time to familiarize yourself with these expectations. Observe how people interact, make decisions, and solve problems. Pay attention to the dress code, punctuality, and adherence to protocols. By understanding and respecting these unwritten rules, you demonstrate your commitment to embracing the corporate culture.
Exemplifying Corporate Culture in Interactions and Actions
As an aspiring executive assistant, your role extends beyond administrative tasks. You become a representative of the corporate culture, both in your personal interactions and in supporting the executives you work with. In this section, we will explore the key sub-items that will guide you in exemplifying corporate culture in your everyday interactions and actions.
Personal Alignment
To truly embody the corporate culture, it is important to align your personal values and behaviour with the organization's cultural expectations. Take the time to understand the core values and principles that drive the organization. Reflect on how your own values align with those of the organization and make a conscious effort to demonstrate that alignment in your actions. By leading by example, you inspire others and contribute to a positive cultural environment.
Representing the Executive
As an executive assistant, you serve as a direct representative of the executive you support. It is crucial to ensure that their actions and decisions align with the corporate culture. Understand the executive's leadership style and their approach to business. Support them in upholding the organization's values and expectations. By acting as a cultural ambassador, you reinforce the desired cultural behaviours and contribute to a cohesive organizational culture.
Cultural Sensitivity
In today's diverse and interconnected world, cultural sensitivity is paramount. As an executive assistant, you will interact with colleagues, clients, and partners from various backgrounds and cultures. Demonstrating respect, empathy, and open-mindedness in your interactions is essential. Be mindful of cultural differences and adapt your approach accordingly. Embrace diversity and seek to understand different perspectives. By fostering a culturally sensitive environment, you contribute to a positive and inclusive workplace culture.
