Explore Character and Purpose

Right now, I am reading Do the Work, and finding it a great value. I have long loved The War of Art by Steven Pressfield and am now exploring his extended notion of doing the work. That said, what is this thing called the work?

Two sacred Writings I find myself continuously drawn towards include:

• "Rise then unto that for which thou wast created."
• "The betterment of the world can be accomplished through pure and goodly deeds, through commendable and seemly conduct."

We can make a difference. And, for me, these two Writings both speak to Purpose and Character. For me, the work starts with the Joy and Zeal of exploring Purpose; something around which I have found myself ever drawn. Exploring Character, equally so.

I deeply believe that when we consider the Character, Abilities, Skills and Knowledge towards which we are most attracted and connected... and then determine where and to whom we most and best can and want to deliver on them in Service... we are finding our best "fit", without some arbitrary and conforming sense of "fitting in". There, we find the work. And, that is powerful, practical Unity in my mind and heart: finding our best fit. Doing our best work. Also, as leaders, if we seek to unite and inspire, it is wise to consider such, and act upon it. What is the work? Then, once known and articulated, do it. Stick to the knittin'... be the best at what matters most.

Indeed and in deed, my own awareness of the work for me is what causes me cool connection with the work of The Virtues Project and Personality Dimensions... ever exploring the application of Character and Temperament to find our own best sense of fit and Purpose and meaning... and just cause. That is my work.

• “Vocation is the place where our deep gladness meets the world's deep need.”

Frederick Buechner suggested such. If we consider this notion, whatever our Faith or none, I suggest that the Global Goals give us an indication of needs in the world and our sense of Character and Purpose give us a better vision of how we can serve to help address same. Now, there is a Unity worth fighting for... and a future for us all. I humbly suggest the exploration of Character and Purpose to find our best "fit" ... and our best sense of Unity.

I work one to one, and in small and larger groups ... with Entrepreneurs, Educators and Emerging Leaders who seek to unite and inspire... to more effectively respond to change… and constructively create it. I bring my sum total of 62 years of living and 42 years of career and the Character, Abilities, Skills and Knowledge I have accumulated ... to that work. That is my own discerned and decided fit of Purpose.
