Looking for a change in scenery?
Canada’s National Wildlife Areas (NWAs) are not just places of breathtaking natural beauty—they are also outdoor playgrounds waiting to be explored.
From birdwatching and hiking to photography and wildlife spotting, these protected areas offer a wide range of activities for visitors of all ages.?
Birdwatching
With over 400 bird species recorded in Canada’s NWAs, birdwatching enthusiasts are in for a treat. From the coastal wetlands of British Columbia to the hardwood forests of Ontario, there are many opportunities to spot a diverse array of avian species. And since every NWA offers birdwatching experiences throughout the year, you can choose when you want to go looking for a particular species, including bald eagles and colourful warblers, or elusive shorebirds and waterfowl.

Hiking and Nature Trails
Exploring the natural beauty of Canada’s NWAs is best done on foot. Many areas have maintained and accessible hiking trails, and some have boardwalks or viewing towers. Take a moment to immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of the wilderness while encountering wildlife along the way.

Water Activities
Exploring Canada’s NWAs by water is a peaceful and immersive way to experience the beauty of these protected areas.
Bring your kayak or canoe to Last Mountain Lake NWA or Lac Saint-Fran?ois NWA and paddle through tranquil waters to get a unique perspective on Canada’s natural landscapes.
For anglers, Last Mountain Lake NWA provides fishing spots—in some of the country’s most pristine waters—for reeling in a variety of fish species. Just be sure to check local regulations and obtain any necessary permits before casting your line.
Take a dip in Lake Ontario with a swim at one of Prince Edward Point NWA’s unsupervised beaches. Though swimming in natural bodies of water can be enjoyable, visitors are reminded to exercise caution, be aware of their surroundings, and swim at their own risk, as the beaches are unsupervised.
Remember: Leave No Trace
While enjoying the activities offered in Canada’s NWAs, it’s essential to practice Leave No Trace principles to minimize your impact on the environment.
This includes:
·?????? packing out all trash;
·?????? staying on designated trails;
·?????? keeping your pets on a leash; and
·?????? respecting wildlife and their habitats.
By following these guidelines, we can all do our part to ensure that Canada’s NWAs will continue to contribute to the conservation of wildlife and biodiversity for generations to come.
