Morning time, is a phase where people are amazed to know new openings coming up, the horoscope, daily country news etc. I was just going through my newspaper, with a sip of warm caramel milk, was one news caught my eye. Putting my glass aside I read, "IT employees files a case against Accenture and Cognizant". I was startled to read that. I was in a dilemma and questioned myself "These 2 companies are IT giants and are a brand in the industry, then why such a problem. I further read " This case was filed by 3 IT employees from Hyderabad in the expectation that the lives of IT employees could get better, and stop work-related exploitation by the companies. The case was against their employer's with the accuses of long working hours, no incentives, bad leave policy and more.
As an HR professional after reading this, I felt a wave of anger in me, thinking that how organizations could be so brutal. An organization is made up of collaborative capability of human efforts. In this case, human efforts seem to be exploited infinitely.
As per the law in our country by the Shop & Establishment Act 1988 ;
- Employees cannot be asked to work for more than 48 hours and a week or 8 hours's a day.
- Overtime can only be imposed for 6 hours' a week and 24 hours's a year
- Every employee must be given 15 days of paid leave, 12 days of casual leave and 12 days of sick leave in a year.
Human efforts are designed to be used for a certain limit, but these IT giants destroy human capability and make them work more than the standard rules set in the organization. White-Collar slavery prevailing in the state in the name of employment. These IT giants are present in the employees hit list.
According to private companies in the US, there is a list of 10 signs that indicates exploitation at work. They are as follows :
- No payment or long salary delay
- You are regularly doing somebody's work
- You noticed sign your employer wants you to quit.
- When manipulations come into play
- Your boss doesn't respect your time off
- No compensation for extra work
- Other's get credit for your idea's or work.
- Your boss endangers your physically or mentally
- Your boss treats you too formal
- Sudden changes in schedule.
In such organizations, can an HR be that magical wand, which can help the organizations to overcome such problems?
HR is to be known as Human-Science Experts. The best companies to work for, are people-driven. They lean in-way in- to the power of an engaged workforce. They invest in employee listening and developing leader's who fuel the success of their teams. They create workplaces where it's acceptable, even expected for employees to love their jobs. It's love that lead's to improved higher performance and better results.
When an organization creates passion in employees works, then it will be never a job for them. I would like to say that humans were born to create magic and wonders but their performance will only flourish, when 3 important factors i.e Ability, Motivation, and Environment will be taken care of. Without this, no organization can survive. Knowing the employee pulse will create examples of the successful organization's in the world.
Finally, I would like to quote " There is no business on a dead planet" and I unquote. An answer to every possibility and success, are human-kind.
