The Curse of the Corporate Paycheck
Your paycheck is a transaction. You get paid a salary and the company pays a percentage of your benefits. In return you work 40+ hours a week, request vacation time and are not “allowed†to work on your own projects. You are stuck and capped financially.
The good news is there is a way out. When you go solo, you can make money in a number of different ways. Through trial & error plus learning from the community I built out a business with multiple revenue streams. I call this The Escapee 1-Person Business Model (or framework if you prefer)
The model is centered around the core problem you solve for your ideal customers (which is what you did in corporate) but allows you the freedom and flexibility to service them in a number of ways which in turn creates multiple revenue stream opportunities.?
Keep this model in mind when you are developing your core offerings. This can expand your business without a lot of extra work.
3 Types of Clients for Your Services
I don’t care if this is B2B or B2C the categories are consistent. It may vary depending on the service or the product but through a discovery session you should be able to determine where they are in the spectrum
- The Doers: These are the classic do-it-yourselfers. They like to learn and do things on their own. Don’t spend a time here but you have options
- The Enthusiasts: They are on board and understand the value of your service but just need a little help or assistance.
- The Concierge Customers: I find this to be the holy grail of customers. These folks also understand your value but don’t want to do any of the work (or as little as possible). They are willing to pay for the premium help.

3 Types of Offerings
The key to revenue growth is building and aligning your offerings with each of the customer types. Conventional wisdom tells you to pick just one but to me that is dumb advice. Just meet the customer where they are. I will use my business for examples.
- Do-it-Yourself (DIY): I provide free content. I have the podcast, the newsletter and the community. I am using this my funnel but you could easily choose to monetize some or all of them. As an example, I am in the process of singing an influencer deal and adding 2 sponsors to the podcast and newsletter. Sometimes it is hard to tell if these prospects are truly DIY or just early in the process of understanding. The free will help build trust and confidence.
- Done with You: This is a light touch program. It could be advisory or coaching. The customer still does the work you assist. An example, my new 60 Day to Your 1st Customer Program. The client is still driving the process but I provide advice, strategy and a touch of accountability. The value I provide is reducing the learning curve and shortening the time to revenue.
- Done for You: This is the high end, turnkey solution that the client does very little of the heavy lifting. In my case, I will be launching a premium turnkey version of the 60 Day program that will become the 6 Week program where we build the content, craft the story and messaging, build the website and provide outreach. This will obviously be my highest price point (short of the sponsorship programs)
BTW, this is the same model I used when I was heavily focused on consulting, fractional and advisory. As an independent growth leader, I offered services across the spectrum. I also added reseller options to take advantage of my network.?
The Bottom Line
The opportunity is there for those willing to go after it. Folks taking action are being rewarded and not just financially. Leaving the overhead of corporate gives you a hell of a lot more time for things you want to do. You don’t have to follow the corporate rules. You can decide how and what you want to do and the best part is you do not need many customers to make this a reality.
