????♂? Where will teens go if TikTok is banned?

If TikTok is banned, teens are likely to turn to Instagram as their primary alternative for social media engagement. This shift is driven by Instagram's ability to offer similar features to TikTok, such as Reels, which allows users to create short-form videos set to music. Instagram has been preparing for this potential transition by enhancing its platform to attract TikTok users. Additionally, YouTube Shorts is another platform that teens might consider, although Instagram remains the top choice.

Instagram as the Primary Alternative: Teens are most likely to switch to Instagram if TikTok is banned. Instagram has been actively developing features like Reels, which mimic TikTok's short-form video format, making it an attractive alternative for TikTok users. This strategic move by Instagram positions it as the leading platform to capture the audience that may be displaced by a TikTok ban.

YouTube Shorts as a Secondary Option: While Instagram is the primary choice, YouTube Shorts is also a contender for teens seeking an alternative to TikTok. YouTube's established presence and the introduction of Shorts provide a familiar platform for users to continue enjoying short-form video content.

Teens' Current Social Media Usage: Currently, 60% of teens use TikTok, 40% use YouTube Shorts, and 28% use Instagram Reels. This indicates that while TikTok is popular, there is already a significant portion of teens engaging with alternative platforms, which could ease the transition if TikTok is banned.

The Newsfeed

Each week we share the most clicked posts from our expert-curated Newsfeed.

01 | Nearly half of Gen Z in the U.K. have given their cars a nickname

According to a recent survey commissioned by Honda, 47% of British Gen Z have given their vehicles a nickname, while only 13% of Boomers have done so. Some of the most popular names include “Baby,” “Betty,” “Beast,” and “Rocket.” According to the study, young drivers say that giving nicknames to their cars fosters a strong emotional connection with their vehicles. In the words of one respondent: “It feels like it’s part of the family in some weird way.” (Businesseye)

02 | The internet is “holding space for the lyrics of Defying Gravity”

In a press interview?moment that has gone hugely viral, journalist Tracy E. Gilchrist told the stars of?Wicked?she had seen people online “taking the lyrics to ‘Defying Gravity’ and really holding space with that.” Gilchrist meant to share how queer people, mostly her friends, felt so connected to the message of breaking through limitations, and actress Cynthia Erivo reacted with sincere emotion. But the clip quickly took off on social media as a joke: everything from deciphering what “holding space” meant to the way Ariana Grande held just one of Erivo’s fingers in support has made meme content. It’s also been made into merch, which is par for the Gen Z meme course now, and Gilchrist says friends have encouraged her to be the one distributing it. (Variety)??

???YPulse data:?66% of 13-39-year-olds agree, “Meme merch is iconic”

03 | Tinder’s annual “Year in Swipe” predicts intentionality from young daters in 2025

While headlines constantly remind us that young people are feeling?“online dating fatigue”?these days, Tinder finds they’re optimistic about the year ahead. (Though, they’re positive about their dating life in general, not just the role of apps in it.) For all Tinder users, the top used phrase in bios was “Looking for,” implying a not-here-to-play-games attitude in dating, and potentially a movement away from using the app solely for hookups. Tinder’s calling this “Loud looking,” a.k.a. announcing their intentions upfront, and it aligns with their other prediction of daters “streamlining their rosters,” or cutting down the quantity of their connections in favor of quality. And for 18-30-year-olds, vision boards for their dating lives are in—which Tinder has created a feature for users to make and manifest in the app. (Mashable)

???YPulse data:?24% of 18-39-year-olds are single and looking to date

04 | Fourth graders in the U.S. perform worse in math testing post-pandemic

This year is the first time the international TIMSS assessment for math and science proficiency, which is run every four years since 1995, has been administered since 2019. And the commissioner of the National Center for Education Statistics calls the U.S. results “devastating.” Though U.S. fourth graders still rank among the middle for measured countries (24th among 52), their average score dropped -18pts. This drop was not uniform though; the decrease comes mainly from students already in the bottom 10% of scores, whose average score dropped by -37pts since 2019. Demographic information from the test also reveals a returning divide between boys’ and girls’ scores, and lower scores among students in lower-income households. (Chalkbeat)

???YPulse data:?65% 13-39-year-olds say "We live in a new normal and it will never go back to how it was pre-COVID-19"

05 | Build-A-Bear and KFC are partnering for two-fold comfort: food and plushies

As YPulse just covered in our?Merch Madness trend report, a brand can make almost anything into merch for young consumers. KFC is leaning into this while also tapping the kidult market for stuffed animals, making three chicken-themed costume pieces for Build-A-Bear. The idea is to combine the holiday togetherness of comfort food with a comforting gift. After all, Build-A-Bear says 40% of their customers are now teens and adults, so this kind of branded customization works even for a traditionally kids’ brand. (PR Newswire,?Nation’s Restaurant News)??

???YPulse data:?67% of 13-39-year-olds agree, “I should be able to personalize any toy I buy”

If anyone still doubts that Israel is committing genocide with OUR tax dollars, please listen to Jewish-Israeli Holocaust and genocide scholar, and former Israeli soldier, Professor Omer Bartov, from Brown University. He is considered to be one of the world's leading authorities on genocide, and in this interview he explains why Israel is clearly committing GENOCIDE: m.youtube.com/watch?v=V5Bg-lKUeUo And here Amos Goldberg, Professor of Genocide Studies at The Hebrew University in Jerusalem, also saying "Yes, it is genocide. It's so difficult and painful to admit it, but we can no longer avoid this conclusion… it is UNDOUBTEDLY GENOCIDE”. https://jacobin.com/2024/07/amos-goldberg-genocide-gaza-israel And here is yet another Jewish-Isreali genocide scholar and expert, Professor Raz Segal, explaining why he calls what Israel is doing “TEXTBOOK GENOCIDE”: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=V5YOctHHccM WHO IS MORE QUALIFIED AND UNBIASED THAN THEM? Thank you to our many Jewish & Israeli brothers & sisters trying to help stop Israel’s racist apartheid & genocide against indigenous Palestinians ????????? We appreciate & love you, & will always stand with you against antisemitism, along with all forms of racism & bigotry.
