Explained: Why Successful India’s G20 Presidency is Crucial for India-US?

New Delhi (ABC Live): The Prime Event of India’s Presidency of the G20 is all set to commence on September 9, 2023, in New Delhi. All pull and push geopolitical forces have already started their job for making India’s presidency a success or otherwise.

The group of countries led by the United States is trying hard to make India’s Presidency of the G20 a successful event in geopolitics with the sole aim of establishing India as a formidable force against China, whereas China is trying to prevent India from claiming any form of "success" as success may increase New Delhi's stature in global affairs.

It is on record that, firstly, China objected to the inclusion of the Sanskrit phrase 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' in documents of the G20 Energy Ministerial Meeting and other G20 documents, but other countries except China firmly backed India’s right as incumbent president to decide the theme of the G20.

'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' is a Sanskrit phrase that means 'the world is one family'.

It is worthy of mention that India played an important role in achieving a consensus at last year's G20 summit in Bali.

China, in its objective to raise obstacles in a successful G20 Summit under India’s Presidency, not only kept putting hindrances on high-profile issues such as Ukraine and climate change, but Beijing also objected to issues like Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment), women-led development, and MSMEs during ministerial and sherpa-level meetings, but the same were smartly managed by India, and after meetings, in the absence of a joint 'joint communiqué, India released a chair's summaries and outcome documents of meetings.

China, after remained unsuccessful in G20 Ministerial/Sherpa meetings, finally played its trump card when, prior to the G20 Leaders Summit in New Delhi, President Xi confirmed that he is not going to attend the summit and downgraded China's participation to Premier Li Qiang level, which is one of the crucial platforms of geopolitical affairs.

Contrary to Xi, Putin informed Prime Minister Modi over a telephone conversation that he is not in a position to attend India’s G20 Presidency Summit; in his place, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will represent Russia, which India fairly understands and therefore gives leverage to Moscow even during G20 Ministerial/Sherpa meetings over the Ukraine issue.

Keeping in view China's 'obstructionist' attitude and the West's push for a mention of Russia's actions in Ukraine is likely to endanger the final outcome and a joint communiqué, which requires consensus, which will be the biggest challenge for New Delhi, and the G20 Larders Summit under India’s Presidency will be a litmus test for India-US strategic partnership for shaping a new world order where your opponent, instead of facing diplomatically, adopts the shoot-and-scoot tactic as the Chinese President adopted by avoiding encountering his counterparts during India's G20 Presidency Summit in New Delhi.
