Being professional is about maintaining some level of communication that is respectable, clear, direct, and understandable. Talking professionally eliminates any signs of sensitive talk and embarrassment, as the talk is under the scope of a professional topic. Professionalism is a way of being presentable for your image and saying your words in a way that makes you also presentable. Being a professional is about adapting to the work environment, and understanding the difference between the personal space and the professional space. Being professional sometimes can be changed by our human nature, where we become more natural.
It depends on the stress in the work environment, in your team harmony, and your current mindset. Being natural is not about being an intruder in the personal lives of your team. It is about dealing in a way close to your real character without your character being constrained by the professional coat. I like to define professionalism as a type of character or mindset that can affect our full behavior, our words, and our body language. Professionalism is being very clear about any concern regarding your work.
It is about separating between your normal life discussions and a discussion related to working with businesses that bring revenue into your organization. Being professional doesn't mean you don't have humor and be always strict. It can be a type of professional humor, where it is said respectably and it comes in the scope of work. Having that professional attitude builds a type of thinking, where you start isolating yourself from judging any individual. The focus is on the work itself. The work is the reflection of the individual. Here the work is the language, where individuals are assessed. It is the measure of the individuals. Professionalism doesn't measure an individual's beauty or physical appearance.

Being professional is showing adaptability to the environment and the team. Here doesn't mean you need to accept any unacceptable behavior. It means to accept the normal behavior of the team without any judgments as long as it's within their boundaries. Professionalism could make you have a programmed mindset for that attitude even outside your working hours. It is not a mistake to be professional outside your work, but life needs a more flexible character than work to be moving. In a working environment, there is a leader with a project plan and a full team with different mindsets, where every individual in the team has certain responsibilities and you have no choice except to work with these individuals.
In the working environment, you don't pick the team member with the best sense of humor and work with him. In that environment, you work with a certain individual who will deliver that part of the task. There is nothing required from that individual except to show respect and finish his part of the task. Asking that individual for support is according to his own experience and availability. Working environments encourage teams to support each other. It could be mandatory in some environments, but here the individual is not asking for a favor. Part of working in a professional organization and part of being professional is that all the individuals support each other to grow.
Not supporting certain individuals and you are capable of doing that is considered as causing a delay to the process. It could be a learning experience for you and it can be an opportunity to grow, as this increases your communication with the team. Supporting is considered part of being professional because the individual asking wants the success of the project as you want. Here there is a mutual benefit and a win-win situation. The individual can be busy and unavailable, but at that case he can state that or schedule a meeting later. At the same time, you could require help from other individuals.
Professional environments has many challenges, where you need to understand the meaning of support and communication to be able to survive. Professionalism is always your savior in working environments and life. Building that type of mindset is not easy and sometimes our human nature could be more stronger than being professional. Try to do your best and maintain your professional real image in work, and try to add the human nature flavor so it doesn't seem fake.
