Experts without the right tools?

We bought a new AC for our office recently and a team came for installation. The team that came to our office had 3 people (one expert, one semi-skilled and one newbie).

I started observing their work and here are somethings I noticed:

  • Whenever they are using an insulation tape and need to cut it, they did not use a scissor / knife, instead they pull the tape with a brute force to tear it off / bite it to cut it with their teeth
  • The copper wire that connects the indoor and outdoor units needed extra length, which initially they did not calculate resulting in a delay of 2 hours
  • He estimated the length of the extra copper wire required, cut it and brazed it with the copper wire that came with the AC unit, only to find that it was a little short and had to cut another small piece of extra copper wire and braze it again
  • For bending the copper wire, he did not have the right tool, but did it manually, resulting in poor fit and finish

So, I asked him why not carry the right tools for their work as they could do the work faster and in a better way. He replied that he doesn't like to carry many tools, other team members use them and not return them, the tools are costly, etc.

I had come across many plumbers, carpenters and electricians who do not carry proper tools for their work. I always wonder how they would improve their quality of work over a period of time? Do they really care about great quality work?

What are your thoughts on this? Can we call them an experts if they do a lot of reworks / do not use proper tools?

Valid Observation Mr. Ananth ! Extending the same, "Prompt, Good & Effective Service" is a result of Right 'Trained' Man, Right 'Standard' Process, Right 'Efficient/Effective'Tools @ The Right Time/Right Place - which leads to Customer Satisfaction (Sometimes DELIGHT) ?! #SSK?#SSaravanaKumar?NOTE : Failures of one of the Right Elements may not guarantee?"Prompt, Good & Effective Service" !

When you bought the AC, I'm wondering if quality of installation team they'll send figured in your choice of vendor. If it did not, then quality of work does not matter to you and hence not to the vendor. When I say you, I'm referring to the typical consumer. Will wrong installation that break down your ac lead you to avoid the vendor in future? Sure. Will clumsy installation that is an eyesore cause you to reconsider your next ac purchase from the same vendor? I wonder. This is all assuming the installation guys were sent by your ac vendor.
