I wanted to understand how DevOps experts are applying/practicing DevOps in their organization, so asked this question on 'DevOps subreddit'.

I thought I will not receive any valuable answers initially. But, this subreddit proved me wrong and I could see some amazing DevOps experts discussing this with valuable information.

How are you applying/practicing DevOps at your company?

To give you an example, I received the responses like below,

"DevOps, for us, means breaking everything we do as a technical organization into a single value stream and approaching the work from that standpoint. Instead of developers who are responsible for writing code, and Sys Admins who deploy it, and Testers who test it, each with their own metrics and processes, we have a single team that is responsible for all of those things, and the metrics are "value delivered to the business."

Now, the things that people call "DevOps" on a normal day-to-day are specific practices that help to achieve that. Investment in automated testing and single button deploy scripts and production-like dev environments that run the same way on a laptop as in production and "infrastructure as code" are all things that, when really bought into, shorten the lead time on "value delivered to the business."

The really interesting thing is that by investing in all of the non-dev things that I just mentioned, it drastically increases the velocity of what is traditionally considered "dev" work because they are much more free to change things without fear and can find defects much earlier in the process. Of course, it can be hard to see that if you haven't done any of those investments yet- having your devs work on setting up CI and testing and infra instead of writing features doesn't seem like something that will lead to them writing code faster, but it really does."
