EXPERTS CALL FOR AN END TO THE STIGMATIZATION OF E-CIGARETTES
More than 30 experts across the globe have called for an end to the stigmatization of e-cigarettes use. However, as an efficient way to minimize smoking effects, public demand for the E-cigarettes and their duty in reducing harm should not be ignored.
From May 25 to 26, 2021, the world's effective e-cigarette conference- "The E-cigarette Summit 2021 " took place in the US through online conferencing.

The experts in attendance discussed the latest world evidence on cigarette replacement, as well as harm reduction. They identified the need for public health institutions to popularize these research results, stop stigmatizing e-cigarettes with immediate effect, hence regaining public trust.
What Was the Summit About?
The summit's theme was "Exploration of the impacts of e-cigarettes on smoking rates." Participants consisted of senior principals from the FDA and renowned specialists from diverse fields like drug reform, medicine, global public health, and tobacco control.
In a series of events, the experts expressed their discontent with e-cigarettes' stigmatization by the media and health institutions shortly after the meeting began. As a result, the conference's theme was modified to “How E-cigarettes' Trust Can Be Regained.”
Some specialists advocated for timely dispersal of accurate e-cigarette information. However, other experts reiterated that there is a conflict of interest between the protection of the youth and assisting smokers in quitting smoking. Hence, a balanced "bridge" must be sought between the two.
How Devastating are the Repercussions of Stigmatizing E-cigarettes?
?
As many cigarette smokers embrace e-cigarettes, the debate is whether health bureaus are trying to frustrate the smokers' trust, hence mutilating their efforts.
?
Prof Warner, an Honorary Professor in the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioural Sciences, was the first expert to speak at this summit.
?
In his view, e-cigarettes' health agencies, the media, and most US policymakers are laying emphasis on issues that affect the well-being of the youth, which is a good thing. However, it is unethical to exaggerate e-cigarettes' harm.
?
Many studies worldwide have confirmed the harm reduction and the effect of replacing cigarettes with e-cigarettes.
At the summit, Jamie Boyce, a senior researcher at Cochrane Tobacco Addiction Group, emphasized the conclusion.
?
"We can all see from the collected scientific evidence that e-cigarettes have the potential to assist smokers in quitting cigarettes. As well, they can potentially reduce mortality and smoking rates equally."

Prof Kenneth Warner said, “It might be as a result of stigmatization of e-cigarettes, that many people, including smokers, mistakenly believe that e-cigarettes are as harmful just like cigarettes are. As a result, worrying phenomena arise.”

Let's Regain Public Trust. E-cigarettes Are Safe?
The dynamic conveyance of the wrong information may cause the media and health institutions to lose the public's trust.
In his speech titled “Are we risking the erosion of trust in Tobacco Control?” Mike Cummings categorically said that maintaining the already built public trust in the public's health institutions is a key. Once trust is built, success in public health campaigns will fall in place.
He rebuked some public health institutions that distort the truth, leading to public trust in them declining.

Clarifying Rumours To Regain Public Trust And Balancing Smokers' Needs Is The Key!
Indifferent grounds between “prohibitionists” and “harm reductionists” should be entrenched to put to an end the battle of words. As a result, the protection of the youth will be achieved.
Supporting adult smokers who intend to replace Cigarettes should be realized as well. However, that should not be the reason why we should ignore the demands of e-cigarette users.
Ethan Nadelmann, who is a drug specialist, said that health bureaus shouldn't be focusing on the “potential harm” of e-cigarettes while, on the other hand, ignoring the chants of present-day consumers and smokers.
According to a report by the foreign media Filter's conference, if e-cigarette products go through the US Tobacco Pre-market Application (PMTA), their goods will not be thrown out of the market since they are "good for public health."
This will translate to the US government officially recognizing the e-cigarettes' harm reduction effects.
