Expert Advice on Launching Your Career in Public Relations and Communications - Shine Bright Like a Disco Ball

I'm often knee-deep in a sea of messages from aspiring professionals seeking guidance, and while I'd love to be everyone's personal career guru (no trust me I really would), it's not always feasible. So, instead of drowning in a never-ending inbox, I've distilled my wisdom into this post, serving as your one-stop shop for navigating the early stages of your PR career. Buckle up, friends, and let's embark on this ride!

Ever wondered how to become one of those cool cats who get to influence the world through the magic of words and relationships?

The dynamic field of PR is like a never-ending party where stories are the cocktails, relationships are the dance partners, and strategic thinking is the DJ who keeps the beat going.

Welcome to the disco - the wild and wonderful world of PR and communications!

What makes a PR and communications pro shine bright like a disco ball?

Throughout my 17 years dancing in the PR disco-sphere, I know that employers are looking for PR professionals who possess a unique blend of skills and qualities - I have attempted to distil some of these below - and I will probably update them over time and based on feedback I receive from my network.

  • Verbal and written communication skills that could make Shakespeare blush: PR and communications professionals are the master storytellers, crafting compelling narratives that resonate with their audience like a catchy pop tune. They can write clearly, concisely, and even whip up a captivating speech that could make even the most jaded critic nod their head in approval.
  • Strategic thinking and problem-solving skills that would make James Bond jealous: PR and communications professionals are the ultimate crisis-averting superheroes and superheroines. They have the foresight to identify potential problems before they turn into full-blown disasters and the strategic brilliance to develop and implement communication plans that would make even James Bond's contingency plans look amateurish.
  • Relationship-building skills that could make even Oprah proud: PR and communications professionals are the social butterflies of the corporate world. They can connect with people on a personal level, build trust like it's going out of style, and effectively convey information in a way that makes even the most cynical stakeholder want to listen.
  • Media relations skills that charm and dance like a ballerina: PR and communications professionals are the media whisperers, mastering the art of pitching stories to journalists like seasoned salespeople. They can maintain positive relationships with the media, handle inquiries with finesse, and manage crises with the grace of a ballerina.

So, how do you break into this exciting world of PR and communications?

I am a scientist by background and I always knew that I enjoyed communicating the tricky world of science so anyone can understand it - for me my path was clear. Here are some of the things that I did:

  1. Gain experience through internships and volunteering: Internships and volunteering are like training wheels for your PR career. They provide valuable hands-on experience, allowing you to learn the ropes and make mistakes without the pressure of a real job. I took several internships throughout university and after - I once spent a whole day calling up science production companies asking if they needed any help.
  2. Network like a social butterfly: Networking is like a secret handshake for PR professionals. Attend industry events, connect with people on LinkedIn, and reach out to those you admire for informational interviews. Building a strong network will open doors to new opportunities, provide valuable insights, and foster collaborations that can propel your career forward. This is so crucial in the early stages - I would always make sure I was a face at any event focused on PR.
  3. Build a portfolio that would make even Picasso proud: Start showcasing your work as you gain experience. This could include press releases, social media posts, blog articles, or any other material you've created. Why not use LinkedIn to start showcasing these?
  4. Stay up-to-date on industry trends like a news guru: The PR and communications landscape is constantly evolving, so it's essential to stay in the know. Read industry publications, follow relevant blogs, and attend webinars and conferences to keep your finger on the pulse. Also ask your colleagues what they are reading.
  5. Cultivate continuous learning: The PR industry is constantly evolving, with new trends, technologies, and communication channels emerging rapidly. Embrace a mindset of continuous learning by staying updated on industry developments, attending workshops, and pursuing relevant courses. This commitment to lifelong learning will keep you at the forefront of the PR field. For example, last year I started a leadership course at Cambridge Business school and this year I did a course with LSE focused on AI in journalism.
  6. Craft a tailored cover letter and resume: When applying for PR positions, take the time to tailor your cover letter and resume to each specific role. Highlight your relevant skills, experiences, and accomplishments that align with the job requirements. Demonstrate your understanding of the company's brand and industry, and showcase your enthusiasm for contributing to their success.
  7. Prepare for the interview process: Research the company thoroughly to demonstrate your genuine interest and understanding of their business. Practice answering common PR interview questions, and be prepared to discuss your past experiences and how they align with the role's requirements. Showcasing your passion for PR and your ability to think strategically will make a lasting impression.
  8. Embrace patience and perseverance: Landing your dream PR job may not happen overnight. Embrace patience and perseverance as you navigate the job application process. Continue to hone your skills, expand your network, and actively seek opportunities to showcase your talent.

I hope these tips are helpful! With dedication and persistence, you'll undoubtedly find your place at the disco...get those dancing shoes ready!!!

I'm looking to get into this line of work, but my work experience is unique. I've been lucky to be an entrepreneur, so I technically do not have corporate work history. Any helpful advice to get my foot in the door? I have a degree in Communications and an MBA.
