Experiment in naming things
If you are a programmer, you'll likely know, naming things is HARD! If you're not a programmer, have you tried going to a friends house and connecting to the wifi and having to ask what funny and comical name did they name their wifi? Oh, sorry, it's simply Linksys123456? Oh ok. (I HOOOOOOPE the password is not 123456!).
Have you tried printing something and trying to remember WHICH one is actually in the other room and not downtown at the office?
What about connecting external hard drives? Have you tried connecting multiple external hard drives and not really know which one goes with which Windows Explorer?
What about phones, have you tried connecting your phone to your car\suv\truck via Bluetooth and trying to figure out the cryptic names that pop up?
Wouldn't it be nice to have any easy and straight forward mechanism or strategy for naming those things, but ALSO to recall each name in six months It's no good finding a cute name if you can't remember it in the future!
I have an experiment to try! I love these types of small experiments. I tried it recently with one of my kids and we had a couple of good laughs and now she will NEVER misunderstand or confuse that external hard drive!
The secret is to have or get geeky stickers. If you are programmer and you have a laptop, you might have some stashed away already in some drawer for your next laptop. Pull'em out and us'em!
When you get a new printer, external hard drive, or something you want discern from other like devices, find a funny sticker, slap it on there (finding a sticker of appropriate size helps!) AND...one last step, rename that device to the what's on the sticker! Otherwise you'll lose the benefits of the sticker when you have multiple hard drives connected at the same time (yes, I've done this, many times).
Note: Cell phones are usually $$$$ so slapping a sticker instead of a protective cover is not advised. BUT you CAN buy cases with cool stickers on them! Checkout dbrand and JerryRigEverything cases, they are AWESOME and add a nice flair. (No, this is not an advertisement for them, I'm just a big fan)

As you can see above in the screen shot, yes, I renamed my printer Juno, and my two external hard drives OttStartUp and ember. And yes, when I see a list of devices, I know EXACTLY without question which THING I'm looking at.
Now that you know how to speed up naming things, it's time to grab a coffee and get coding!
PS To start you off, here are some funny ones from Amazon.

10 个月Naming things is really hard. Most people who have worked with me will have heard me express how much I hate naming things. I know there are people out there who are really good at it, but this guy is not one of those people. I like the idea for physical things. Let me know if you find a good place to attach a sticker on SaaS software!
