The Experiment Mastering the Art of Continuous Learning – Solving Brain Drain

Welcome to the Fifth edition of The Experiment.

There’s lots of talk about continuous learning but what does it take to make it a reality in your workplace?

What’s the future of Learning & Development and how do we make work, work for all not a chosen few?

Plus how can we move beyond simply thinking about skilling and re-skilling to a mindset and approach that consider the holistic development of our teams.

Based on 16 plus years of field research across 200 projects and the successful development of over 2000 people, The Experiment takes insights and lessons from the trenches and shows you how to create a workplace of genuine, continuous learning. ?

Beyond the talk.

If you’re a purpose led Leader committed to solving brain drain this newsletter is designed for you.

Let’s fix the leaks that exist within L & D, and leverage the everyday wisdom falling through the organizational cracks.

Here’s to a different type of future – the circular workplace ??

PS If you get value from The Experiment please feel free to share with your connections and colleagues.

Be generous - skills, expertise and knowledge only has value when shared with others.

QUICK FIRE ADVICE FROM THE L & D FRONTLINE

SETTING TEAMS UP TO DO GREAT – 4 THINGS THAT MATTER ??

I've seen first hand the power of thinking about skill gaps, threats and risks differently.

And responding collectively.

But I am also aware that to make smart decisions around how you will prioritise skill gaps, threats and risks you have to:

1??

Have 100% focus and clarity on the outcomes and impact you want to achieve and by when. Know how to work together to define what great looks like for you and your team.

?2??

Create a solid understanding of what high-value outcomes and impacts are and what’s not. High-value work is the actions that bring the most benefit, have the highest return and the greatest positive impact. It’s the sweet spot between the mission of the business and what your client and employee cares about.

3??

Have absolute respect for how you use your time and the time of those around you. Forget time management, banish it from your vocab and use time respect instead. It changes people’s perception and as a result their behaviour and action. ?

4??

Proactively manage and influence the expectations of people. This is essential to reducing the risk of workplace myth making that occurs when people are left to create their own "stories of truth".

SHORT AND TO THE POINT VIDEO – REJECT THE PREMISE IF YOU WANT DIFFERENT

This is my first experimentation with short from video on LinkedIn so let me know your thoughts.

The enemy is the status quo so adopt a critical mind my friends when deciding what gets your precious headspace.

This is the first of my Friday takeaways in this format so keep an eye out for quick grabs under two minutes.

HOW DO YOU CREATE SUSTAINABLE WORKPLACE CHANGE?

From kiikstart.com I provide depth and detail around how this was achieved in the middle of the Australian Outback.

What actions were most important to implement end to end? I break this down in a series of steps so follow along as you wish.

Inspiring yes, but also practical too more importantly.

Still one of my most memorable projects due to its complex and challenging nature. And the fact that the client said this project "changed the DNA of the business". Plus the bottom line.

VIDEO NEEDING MORE TIME AND BRAINSPACE

In 1994, Derrick McManus was shot 14 times in less than 5 seconds with a high-powered semi-automatic rifle.

Two and a half years later he returned to full duties in the South Australian Police Force. ? Derrick join me to share his insight and the tools he used to go beyond resilience to durability and create sustained optimum performance. I had the opportunity to first see Derrick speak in 2006 when I was just starting out in business and his message had a profound effect on me.

It still does.

Whatever your role, industry or circumstance you’ll get something not only highly inspiring but extremely practical to take with you into the future.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

In 2008 I founded Kiikstart so purpose led brands could solve "leaky" L & D approaches and not waste the wisdom generated cross roles, teams and functions generated day to day.

I created a repeatable approach where we generously share expertise, wisdom and lessons learnt within teams and cross teams.

And de-risk the risk of brain drain as a result.

Expertise and insights currently leave the building when people move on to their next role.

Or retire.

There’s gaps in how teams connect learning to project delivery and the ongoing management of expertise and lessons learnt.

The outcome is the same errors or mistakes being made again. And again.

So, I’ve dedicated the last 16 years creating the circular workplace where L & D is fair and equitable and wisdom is 100% leveraged regardless of role and position.

I look forward to you joining me on the trip. ?
