The Experiment

The Experiment

I've been holding myself back for years. I've decided to do something about it.

What's the holdup you may ask? I'm not investing enough in my personal wellness. It results in my being unnecessarily tired, uninspired, and unproductive. The primary culprit?

I'm not making sure I get the sleep I need.

I've always needed a lot of sleep. How well rested I am is the key factor determining how happy I am yet I still do things that prevent me from getting good sleep. BTW, my daughters, 3 and 5 don't help much. Like their Daddy, they're morning creatures. It's been depriving me of sleep since the elder was 2 or so.

I can't blame them though. I haven't been focusing enough on getting rest and have simply accepted trade-offs that have left me feeling sub-optimized.

That's changing now. I'm doing an experiment in which I'll make getting good sleep my primary objective for the next 40 days. I'll try to write about my experience from time to time. As you'll see, it's not just about getting in bed at the right time and not using an electronic device 30 minutes before sleeping.

The relationship between sleep and virtually every other aspect of my life is strong and it's about time that I acknowledge it and, as importantly, do something about it. Stay tuned.

Read the next post on my experience here.

Greg Prickril I'm curious! How did it go so far?

I'm in the same boat as you, Greg.... I never seem to get enough sleep. This has a direct effect on my concentration and productivity during the day, too. I even got myself a Fitbit smartwatch, to be able to track my sleep metrics, and tried using the improvement programs they provide, which help.... until lack of discipline sets back in. One root cause, I found, was that at the end of a tough work day (which obviously was made harder by struggling to stay focus and awake), I simply want to relax, and spend a few hours with personal work or simply passtime activities (family, TV, enjoying some wine etc..) - far too often past a reasonable bedtime limit.

I read that it takes 45 consecutive days to mylenate a new sheath (to form a new habit). So extend it by 5 days, and then make sure you don't let it lapse for more then 30 days, and you should be good. (I'm like you, I need at least 9 hours a night to feel productive during the day.
