Experiential learning for VUCA?

VUCA as a term is probably familiar to most business. Organisations train their leaders on how to lead in a rapidly changing, unpredictable and uncertain environment which has many factors at play.

Now you might say that think that you are a happy go lucky individual who clocks her/his hours productively. And you are happy with that. So no VUCA training or VUCA terminology for you right?

Wrong!

The last one year has been for a lot of us an experiential learning in VUCA. And it is not facilitator driven. ??

You are pretty much on your own figuring out what to do next. Right from work to your commute to your holidays and even socialising has changed in ways which you probably didn't imagine before 2020. Maybe you could not celebrate a birthday or an anniversary or perhaps you couldn't get married the way you would like to.

And as 2021 came in you were hopeful that things would get better. Well maybe in some ways they have and in some they have not.

As we begin the new financial year in a few days, it does seem that we will be hearing an reading a lot more about viruses and vaccinations.

So let us focus on what we can do rather than what we cannot.

Seven suggestions from me are:

  1. Embrace change. Accept that things are going to be different. Accept that this probably lasted a bit longer than you expected it to in March 2020.
  2. If you have set goals for short term and long term, pause and reflect if you need some adjustment in your short term goals while you stay focussed on those in the long term. If you have not set goals, now maybe a good time.
  3. Save. And invest. And do it wisely. Am sure you must have heard of the old saying about saving for a rainy day. As you hope for the clouds of gloom to disappear, do prepare for the rain.
  4. Invest in your health. You are your biggest asset. Take good care of yourself.
  5. Stay updated with whats happening in your industry and see if you can listen to industry leaders who can think ahead of times.
  6. Manage your emotions and your thoughts. Its ok to feel low as it is ok to feel happy. Think positive. As everything else, this phase too shall pass.
  7. Collaborate. Professionally as well as personally. You may come across great opportunities to learn from other individuals when you collaborate.

Stay focussed! Stay safe! Stay healthy!
