Experienced Salespeople Need Training Too

Recently, I had a conversation with a sales manager who strongly believed that his team did not require any sales training due to their experience.

Hearing such a perspective is disheartening because the manager's attitude is a hindrance. It reflects a non-growth mindset that will ultimately result in financial losses and hinder future success for him, his team, and his company.

Additionally, it will inevitably lead to unnecessary challenges because if we aren't actively working to improve our skills, they will naturally deteriorate over time. This principle applies to all aspects of life.

Here are a few reasons why people might hold this misconception:

  1. Overconfidence: Experience can lead to overconfidence in one's abilities, i.e., assuming past successes equal future successes. Hmmm...
  2. Resistance to Change: Sure, but how much harder is it than performing below expectations or worse, your or their true capability, day after day? [Insert David Goggins' Quote].
  3. Lack of Awareness: It is far too easy to underestimate the dynamic nature of sales, unaware of the constant evolution in markets, customer behaviors, and technologies that require skill adaptation.

However, it is important to recognize that sales training offers numerous advantages even for experienced professionals.

Continuous training helps salespeople refine their skills, stay updated with industry trends, learn new techniques, enhance their communication abilities, and adapt to changing customer needs.

Every outstanding athlete, manager, or salesperson understands the necessity of continuous training in order to excel in their respective fields.

While experienced salespeople possess knowledge and skills acquired through their years of practice, ongoing training remains crucial for their continued growth and success.

Training programs provide valuable insights, knowledge, and best practices to improve sales performance further and help salespeople achieve even greater success.

  • Increased sales revenue by 20%: Sales teams that received comprehensive sales training experienced a 20% growth in sales revenue compared to those without training.
  • 15% improvement in closing rates: Sales professionals who underwent targeted sales training exhibited a 15% increase in their closing rates, leading to higher conversion and success rates.
  • 30% boost in sales productivity: Companies that invested in sales training programs observed a significant 30% improvement in sales productivity, resulting in higher sales volume per representative.

The world becomes a significantly better place when ethical and highly skilled salespeople are at the forefront. It is essential not to fall into the trap of equating experience with excellence. We all have the potential to thrive through continuous training, mutual support, and a shared belief in our ability to grow. Often, our most formidable adversaries are those who settle for mediocrity by proclaiming, "that's sufficient."
