Experience Method: Attention to detail

Experience Method: Attention to detail

The Power of Details in Creating a WOW Experience

Details are more than just small touches—they’re essential for crafting a truly remarkable experience. In design, overlooking details can lead to inefficiencies and missed opportunities for user engagement. Each subtle element, from creating stories to personalized touches, plays a crucial role in enhancing loyality and satisfaction. Without attention to these finer points, even the most experience product can fall short of creating an impactful and memorable user experience. Embrace the power of details to ensure your design not only works efficiently but also delights and resonates with users.

This method is only one part of a puzzle the increase the probability to create an experience.

When do we need experiences and when we don't?

We need experience creation in all products in tools where we like that people stay really long, or wher epoeple have to stay really long to increase motivation and joy of use.

  • Ecommerce platforms
  • Every software people have to use many hours a day
  • Consumer products
  • InCar experience
  • Services like hotel experience, hospital experience (private), Airport experience
  • Museum
  • A conference

Where we normally don't focus on experiences / attention to details are products with a clrear focus on the job to be done.

  • Check our process
  • Order a taxi
  • Cleaning materials
  • Governemntal service area
  • Cashier
  • Apps for a clear process - where we don't bother with

Why Details Matter in Creating a WOW Experience

  1. First Impressions Count: Small details, like smooth animations or detail decoration, create a memorable first impression that captures users' attention and sets the stage for a positive experience.
  2. Increased Emotional Impact: Thoughtful design details—like personalized messages or subtle visual cues—can evoke emotions and foster a deeper connection, turning a simple experience into a delightful one.
  3. Consistency and Quality: Details ensure that every aspect of the user experience is cohesive and polished, reflecting a high level of quality and professionalism that reinforces trust and credibility.
  4. Surprise and Delight: Unique and unexpected details can pleasantly surprise users, making their experience memorable and encouraging positive word-of-mouth and repeat usage.

Example of detail

This is the same picture one with less one with more detail. When you look at both, they have the same expression.

But if you look at the right one a second or third time, you will see much more details and you will like it much more.

The same is with good and bad movies.

You can watch a good movie a view times and you will always see new elements which you didn't realize thr first times. This makes the difference.

You don't need to create detail in all touchpoints

Picture in Walt Disney World

Manhole covers have to be one of the most generic, standardized building products one can buy. I am convinced that you think - why spending more money to individualize a manhole cover.

But Disney decided to make it personalized. This is what we mean by "Attention to detail" Not everyone recognize it, but those who do, loves the detail. The manhole is part of a huge experience area - and if you like to create experiences you have to spend detail to it.

So an important task for you is always the delimitation of the project scope for your experience

I am organizing the World Usability Congress and I am also trying to create an experience!

During the whole conference there are many touchpoints which we can design into additional elements which makes the whole conference to a memorable experience.

Done by WUC24

As more different details people can experience, as higher is the probability that people go home and say - WOW what a cool conference!

For all who joined this conference, please comment to the article!

  • Personal details / shoes
  • Welcome experience
  • Areas for personalisation and memories
  • High quality dinner for networking
  • Different elements like knights and swords which males it different
  • A unique DJ who becomes part of the #WUC family

For every project where you liek to create an experience, ask you following questions:

? Do you need to create an experience or not?

? Are you paying attention to the details of your project?

? Does this detail support your subject matter or story?

? Does this detail support your creative intent?

? Are you including too much detail? Too little?
