Experience established: 1992

Fall of 1992, I really loved my job as a dental assistant. This was in a very small, rural town, knew nearly everyone that sat in our chairs (this can be good and bad), the dentist was amazing....gentle, empathetic, always and I do mean always available when needed.

"Mrs. dentist' managed the office, scheduled (double, sometimes triple booked) appointments, the office was open 4 days a week, Mondays was for 'lab' and extra cleaning and organizing before the madness began early on Tuesdays.

The Dentist and his wife were empty nesters and loved to travel. They'd close up shop a minimum of 4 weeks a year, sometimes more, sometimes less.

I did not get paid when the office was closed, and at the time, no paid time off.

I had 2 kids under 10 years old and my (then) husband earned a decent living but it was a monetary strain nonetheless.

One day, my childcare provider's sister (again, small town) told me they had a position open at the title company and I'd be perfect.

Work 5 days a week, dress in something other than scrubs, paid time off, but I offered zero experience and though I had purchased and sold homes before, no idea what escrow/title really did.

I applied, got the job and 'gulp' had to tell the Dentist I was moving on. Difficult but he understood

I started at the Title company, fall of 1992 and have not changed careers since. I've moved to different states, on several occasions (always due to husband's career) nearly always had a job to the 'new' state before we even started to pack, I've co-owned and managed three separate small businesses 'on the side', managed appts/treatments and her household for my terminally ill mother, helped with grandbabies and have been through a couple of layoffs due to downturns in the industry and opened, built up and managed an escrow company for a group of Realtors.

Like life, the real estate industry is cyclical, it has it's ups, it's downs and everything in between, and can be full of both pleasant and very unpleasant surprises.

We're always evolving & moving forward, not backward. Embrace the sometimes wild ride... but always, always have fun!

I had forgotten your first career Shellee. Love this overview and love the passion you bring to everything you do! You’re one of a kind and a true gem! So glad we met in Colorado back in 2011 (or was it 2012!?) ??
