From March 23rd (Wed) to 27th (Sun), 2022, the popup event, "Haisa~i! Okinawa Brown Sugar Fair" will be held at MuSuBu, located in Shirokanedai, Tokyo.

?Okinawa Prefecture, which is rich in history, traditions, and processes an abundance of natural and cultural heritage, will celebrate the 50th anniversary of its reversion to Japan this May.

To celebrate this momentous occasion, a popup event centered around “Okinawa brown sugar”, which is made from sugarcane that has been grown in the tropical sunshine and is known as a specialty product of Okinawa Prefecture, as it boasts the largest production volume in Japan.

At this pop-up event, you will be able to experience the history of Okinawa Prefecture and hear directly from those who continue to support traditional delicacies through the use of "Okinawa brown sugar", while enjoying the charm of Okinawa Prefecture like never before!

Happo-en’s MuSuBu Chefs have arranged an original menu that uses the traditional "Okinawa brown sugar", which has a history of nearly 400 years. We invite you to discover the traditional culture and charm of “Okinawa brown sugar"!

To create an amazing braised Agu pork rice set, we have simmered the Okinawan "Agu” pork in "Okinawa brown sugar" and combined it with "Handama", a native vegetable to Okinawa. Enjoy this dish together with a clear soup made with a seasonal bitter melon and vinegard vegetables.

Okinawa is also well known for the Okinawa's specialty Awamori, an alcoholic beverage that has been enjoyed since ancient times. At this pop-up showroom, with the cooperation of Mizuho Shuzo, the oldest brewery in Okinawa, we will hold a tasting event where visitors can experience the perfect blend of Awamori and Okinawan brown sugar, which is unique to Okinawa Prefecture.

Now, a project team is also working to create a new Okinawan sake that takes advantage of the unique characteristics of "Okinawan brown sugar” by innovating the awamori-making techniques that have been cultivated over its 170-year since the company's founding in 1848.

3. Experience - Let's make the traditional sweet, "Chin-bin Po-po" using Okinawa brown sugar!

At the MuSuBu's pop-up showroom, we prepare a wide range of experiences that both children and adults can enjoy. This time, we have prepared a cooking experience that will be lead by Ms. Kumiko Tamaki, an Okinawa food professional. Ms. Kumiko Tamaki will introduce the history and traditions of Okinawan food, including the simple and gentle tasting brown sugar crepe "Chin-bin (Po-po)," and hold a workshop to learn, create, and taste.

Kumiko Tamaki (Okinawa Lifestyle Advisor / Food Analyst), a food analyst who actively promotes "Okinawan Culture". She has worked throughout Japan and abroad to promote the "enjoyment of Okinawa regardless of location". She is active in a wide range of activities such as holding Okinawan cooking classes, planning and supporting events, in addition to developing recipes.

Mr. Isamu Ura is the Deputy Director and Manager of Operations for the Okinawa Brown Sugar Cooperative Association. The production of brown sugar in Okinawa Prefecture has nearly 400-years of history. He is a professional who has a deep connection with the life, culture, and economy of the Okinawan people, while passing down the tradition of "Okinawan Sugar".

One of the ways he does this is by teaching local children how to make brown sugar, and delivering the charm of "Okinawa brown sugar" through radio, TV, SNS, etc. every day.

5. Sale - Enjoy Okinawa Prefecture in your own home with specialty products.

In the store, we will introduce and offer a wide range of specialty goods from Okinawa Prefecture with a focus on "Okinawa brown sugar” for sale.

The store will also offer a wide range of specialty products such as "uji dyes”, which are dyes and textiles using sugarcane, and traditional handicrafts such as "yachimun", which is a traditional Okinawa ceramic, allowing everyone to appreciate the charm of Okinawa Prefecture in a broader and deeper way.
