Expel’s position on access to reproductive healthcare for our people

Someone recently asked me, “as CEO, how do you know when to take a public position on something?” It’s a tough question, especially over the past few years. I’ve tried to come up with a framework, but it seems like any structure I try to put in place gets riddled with holes as it’s confronted with the reality of the world. Thus, I’ve been left with the rather unsatisfying answer: “I know it when I see it.”

Like right now.?

Because of the recent decision by the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade—stripping women of reproductive healthcare rights—I find it necessary to be clear and unambiguous on my…and thus Expel’s…position. I find it unconscionable that a woman’s healthcare options now dramatically depend on which state she lives in. Therefore, Expel will ensure our benefits include consistent and safe access to the healthcare our people need, regardless of the state in which they live, and we'll continue to do so for as long as we are legally and financially able.

In sharing some of this with my employees recently, I found myself deeply uncomfortable. There are two reasons. First, I’m personally not a fan of listening to men pontificate on this issue. But, in listening to some of the women of Expel, they highlighted how important it is to hear men speak up. Despite my discomfort, it's necessary.

Second, I don’t like picking sides when, by doing so, I might make some of my crew uncomfortable or feel “not welcome.” I acknowledge that not everyone will agree with my position. However, I feel strongly that I need to take a side on this significant issue. If you don’t agree with me, that is ok. You are still welcome here. I must still take actions in keeping with my conscience, and I understand others will feel the need to do the same.

Why? Because at Expel we know that taking care of others starts with taking care of ourselves, and that includes access to essential healthcare.
