Expedition Travel…Indelible Memories with My Family

Travels with my family on Lindblad Expeditions have created some of our family’s most enduring and special memories. Galápagos , Baja California , and Alaska are so vastly different, yet in each destination we were able to immerse ourselves in nature, wonder at animals and vistas, and share great laughter and stories that will last for years. In this overstimulated, electronic age, this time away from devices while engaged in nature’s beauty was also an excellent reset for us as parents and an educational delight that was also a break for our children as they progressed from middle school to college, and now to new careers.?

A unique experience in itself, Lindblad ships are a remarkable sight. The structures are built as vessels meant to travel the globe! Because my family and I love the outdoors as well as enjoying life on the water, going on an expedition cruise with Lindblad has been a welcome change from taking a traditional boat voyage. Having the ability to venture to some of the most remote places while having the luxury of comfort onboard, it’s evident the thought and planning of these ships were designed by the same people who enjoy them too! Grateful for the sophisticated services and expertise Lindblad provided during our multiple family explorations; my family and I were always left with a feeling of exhilaration and awe. Through these one-of-a-kind expeditions, we enjoyed quality time together and have phenomenal photos to show for it.

Our first voyage was on the original National Geographic Islander which gave us a fabulous ride to the Galápagos Islands—rich with incredible flora and fauna, striking terrain, and magnificent views. Despite being "built for adventure," the Islander offered top-quality comfort while onboard between excursions. We bonded quickly with our like-minded fellow passengers as we gathered in the spacious dining room and lounge. It was in these comfortable quarters where we swapped tales of our Galápagos discoveries while savoring deliciously prepared local cuisine made by talented Islander chefs. Thanks to Lindblad’s naturalist guides who accompanied us during our daily outings, we observed and learned a lot about the prolific wildlife during the expedition.?

What images endure? Snorkeling in the Galápagos with my son and having a sea lion pup swim and swirl around us, curious to play. Sitting on the beach and the young sea lion curiously checking our flippers and wetsuits. You just can’t make this stuff up! And what’s not to laugh and love about a male blue-footed booby honking and showing off his blue feet in pursuit of a girl? Our experiences on sea and on land were so spectacular and well organized, I cannot imagine traveling to the Galápagos Islands and exploring the area any other way than with Lindblad!?

?Several years later, we ventured aboard the National Geographic Sea Lion heading to Baja. With a shallow draft and small size, she can easily reach places inaccessible to larger ships. The Sea Lion can venture into fast-moving channels where whales come to feed, transit a series of locks in the Pacific Northwest, nose up to waterfalls in secluded coves, and sail into protected anchorages in small bays perfect for snorkeling and kayaking.?

The latest expedition adventure I took with my family came by way of the National Geographic Venture to the great state of Alaska. This new vessel was equipped with large windows for observation, expansive decks and scenic railings to gaze from for optimal wildlife viewing, and dual Zodiac launching areas for easier loading of excursions. We took advantage of the onboard fitness center and used the mudroom to store our expedition gear. We (safely) hiked past streams with a bear fishing for salmon in sight. Paddle boarding past glaciers. Zooming in a Zodiac while dozens of bald eagles soar overhead, otters play, sea lions splash and bark, and the occasional whale surfaces to breach. I can smell the salt air and feel the excitement, just writing this down after 18 years of travel!

During each of our various expeditions, my family and I were exposed to nature’s beauty and were reminded of how fragile our delicate environment is. We are grateful for Lindblad’s efforts and work as a leader in responsible travel and sustainability so future generations can enjoy the same views, fresh air, and incredible global experiences as my family and I did.
