Expectations

Expectations

Today's devotional is from Your Life Matters: Daily Reflections from the Psalms

"It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in humans" - Psalm 118:8.

It's inevitable that you will disappoint those closest to you and those closest to you will disappoint you. This can happen through an insignificant daily event or a major life matter in which you were counting on that person for support and help and they were unable to deliver according to your expectations—or you according to theirs. The closer the person is to you, the more painful the disappointment can be.

The Apostle Paul knew this kind of pain for he wrote: "You know that everyone in the province of Asia has deserted me, including Phygelus and Hermogenes" (2 Timothy 1:15). Therefore, you are best served if you put high expectations on the Lord who will never desert or betray you and lower your expectations of others, realizing that you have probably disappointed others closest to you just as they have you.
