EXPECTATIONS for 2021

If 2020 was the year of the unexpected, what are we to expect for 2021? Perhaps a year to reflect, prepare and reinvent?
On the one hand last year changed and reshaped much, regardless of who and where. And it looks like there will be more sporadic lockdowns, restrictions and staying put.
On the other hand the uncertainty has been a catalyst for increased Science funding, increased awareness of others, increased engagement and support within local communities, not to mention a healthy increase in cynicism leading to curiosity and fresh thinking.
Global conversations around humanity are rapidly expanding: how we live on our planet and interact with one another; responsibility and freedom, and the delicate balance required within these complex systems.
Personally I choose to feel positive about humanity in general. While we make mistakes, this is also how we learn and grow. Mostly I observe increasing efforts to make good, improve and help. Of course there are always exceptions and disappointments, but these too reminds us that we have choices and that our actions have consequences; and even challenge our beliefs.
With a 30 year career in visual art: including as a commercial gallery owner, independent artist and interior designer - I feel passionate about bringing awareness to the courage required to commit to a career in the Arts.
Artists are required to work and present repeatedly with little security or income predictability. As a lifetime career choice this takes a lot - often for no pay and self funding. It also requires being brave enough to continuously express authentic creativity and to share up this particular uniqueness for criticism and opinions.
Most of us will agree that Art is valuable in that it defines place, creates cultural differentiation, invites conversation and celebrates diversity. So choosing to support what is unique and creative within your community holds value not only because it is beneficial and needed, but also because it allows personal expression for both artists and patrons.
Thank you for your support and appreciation of art created in your community.
