Expect a Miracle

They found these words written on a small piece of cardboard cut in the shape of a small plaque.

About 7 inches by 3 inches.

The cardboard was hung on the wall in a completely empty room.

Yet this room was so meaningful.

In January 1969, this room became the first abode for Vicente Ferrer and Anne Perry and four of their friends, who came to help the poorest of the poor in Anantapur, India.

As Anne noted in her book bearing the same name, “of course, all of us stood there staring at it. It was so prophetic.”

Indeed it was.

And the miracle happened -- because Vicente and Anne Ferrer had a vision for serving millions of people from the most vulnerable communities in this driest area in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.

One village at a time.

One egg and one spoonful of ragi drink to a hungry mother and child.

One dose of antibiotic to a poor man struggling with TB.

One woman with a disability who gains job training.

One sack of rice to a hungry widow.

One women’s association formed by a Chenchu tribal woman.

One bicycle given to a child so he can stay in school.

One kind word.

One sincere smile.

Yes, expect a miracle, but work hard for it.

Act.

Do something to help your fellow human being.

Respond to the cry of humanity.

These were the principles that guided Vicente Ferrer and his dedicated team.

Vicente and Anne Ferrer ? RDT 2019
He said: “How can we help this man? He is one of us. It is these people who are marking our way. This is not simply a man who is asking help…It has a deeper meaning. It is the cry of mankind, shouting, wanting to fly away from desperation. It is this cry that we have to send as a message to India and to the rest of the world. It is humanity calling us.”

The Vicente Ferrer Foundation was founded with a mission to hear that “cry of mankind” and help eradicate rural poverty in India. During the past 50 years, over 3 million people in 3,600 villages in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have been freed from the burden of abject poverty.

It is fascinating what great vision and hard work can achieve!

And that is why on Saturday, December 7, at the Capital Hilton in Washington, DC, we invite you to join us in celebrating the 50th anniversary of this remarkable mission and impact.

There is so much to share.

There is so much to connect us all.

And yet there is so much more to do.

Join us to help eliminate poverty in rural India.
