Expansive Soils are types of soils that have the propensity to significantly increase or decrease in volume as their moisture content changes. These soils typically contain clay minerals that have the ability to absorb and retain water, causing them to expand and exert pressure on surrounding structures. When the moisture content decreases, the soil contracts, potentially leading to ground settlement and the formation of cracks in buildings, foundations, walls, or pavements. The presence of expansive soils poses a significant challenge after construction and requires proper engineering techniques and foundation design to mitigate the potential damage they can cause.
