Expanding Pharmacist Services in Ontario: Bringing Care Closer to Home

The Ontario government is making strides to transform pharmacies into comprehensive healthcare hubs, enhancing accessibility and convenience for residents across the province. This initiative is part of an ongoing effort to connect people with care close to home by broadening the roles and responsibilities of pharmacists.

Government Consultation on Expanding Pharmacist Services

Currently, the Ontario government is collaborating with healthcare partners to explore ways to further expand the scope of care provided by pharmacists. This includes treating additional common ailments, administering more vaccines, and performing more point-of-care testing.

A Successful Foundation

Since January 2023, Ontario pharmacies have conducted over one million assessments to treat and prescribe for 19 common ailments, such as cold sores, pink eye, insect bites, and urinary tract infections. Remarkably, 99% of all pharmacies in Ontario—over 4,600 locations—are participating in this program, highlighting the success and acceptance of pharmacist prescribing across the province.

Future Enhancements in Pharmacist Services

Building on this success, the Ontario government is considering several new measures to leverage the expertise of pharmacists and make pharmacies even more comprehensive:

  1. Treating and Prescribing for More Ailments: The list of conditions that pharmacists can treat and prescribe for may soon include 14 additional ailments, such as sore throat, mild headaches, and minor sleep disorders like insomnia.
  2. Expanded Point-of-Care Testing: Pharmacists may soon be able to order specific laboratory tests and perform additional point-of-care tests, streamlining the process of diagnosing and treating common conditions.
  3. More Vaccination Services: The government is considering allowing pharmacists to administer additional publicly funded vaccines, such as Tetanus, Pneumococcal, and Shingles.
  4. Enhancing the MedsCheck Program: The MedsCheck program, which assists patients in managing their medications, will be improved to support better health outcomes and reduce unnecessary service duplication while maintaining patient choice.

Looking Ahead

Deputy Premier and Minister of Health Sylvia Jones emphasizes the government's commitment to expanding access to care:

“Our government is continuing to expand our bold and innovative plan to make it easier for people to connect to the care they need, close to home. Pharmacist prescribing has been a huge success in Ontario, and we are excited to work with our partners to help explore more opportunities to leverage pharmacies to connect people to care in Ontario, no matter where they live.”

By continuing to expand the role of pharmacists, the Ontario government is taking proactive steps to ensure healthcare is more accessible, efficient, and convenient for everyone in the province.
