Expanding our reach in Strathcona
The Mustard Seed
Eliminating homelessness and reducing poverty where we serve, since 1984.
As the renovations began for the Strathcona Neighbour Centre, the world was in a very different state. Now, four years later, and on the remnants of a global pandemic, we will finally be able to open our doors again to the vulnerable population of Edmonton.
The Mustard Seed saw the need for more shelter spaces in Edmonton’s southside grow over the last few years and decided to renovate the Neighbour Centre to fit those needs. The Strathcona Neighbour Centre will be The Mustard Seed’s first permanent shelter in Edmonton.
The newly renovated building now has 50 overnight shelter spaces to give Edmontonians experiencing homelessness a safe place to sleep. Along with the shelter space, The Neighbour Centre Strathcona will be offering supports such as: showers, laundry, food related education and programming (including meals), footcare, addictions and mental health programming, space for combating social isolation, a focus on client centered approach to goal setting, housing, and advocacy.
The doors for the new shelter will officially open at the end of the summer and The Mustard Seed will begin to offer more vital supports to the vulnerable population of Edmonton - but we wouldn’t have been able to create this space without the help of amazing donors like the Shaw Family Foundation.

“This generous gift from the Shaw Family Foundation is the catalyst needed to begin meeting needs on the southside of Edmonton in a more significant way,” said Dean Kurpjuweit, the Mustard Seed’s chief regional officer. “The Shaw family is directly supporting change for our participants, and for that, we are deeply grateful.”
We're overwhelmed with gratitude by the support of the community for this project. Click here ?to find out more information on the renovations on our website.
