Expanding my Portfolio

My name is Prashanth Jogimutt , Founder of Finvest India and this is the short story of one of my Investor who visited Finvest India office last week

I am 24 and work in an MNC in Bangalore. My CTC is ? 50,000 per month. I am planning to complete my MBA next year. I have ? 5 Lakhs in savings and looking to expand my portfolio through long term investments. Please guide.

One's long-term investments should primarily be a mix of equity and fixed income products. The fixed income part of the portfolio starts with Employee Provident fund (EPF) and continues to increase with increments in salary.

Exposure to equity can be taken through Equity Mutual funds . Create the core of your portfolio with passive funds from the large cap and midcap space, and supplement it with schemes from categories such as small cap, multi cap or focused funds.

Invest money that is not needed in the near to medium term. With increments, keep adding to your investment portfolio. To manage near-term expenses, start an SIP in a debt fund (liquid or ultra short).

In addition, a emergency fund equivalent to a year's expenses must be maintained in a liquid fund. Some exposure to gold can be taken via gold funds or sovereign gold bonds depending upon preference.

A home is every one's dream and that will eventually be on your goal list. While a home loan will be hard to avoid, don't go overboard with buying other things using loans.

Budgeting is a great tool which can help you assess monthly inflow and outflow. This will also help you understand what is being spent where.

A term plan and health insurance should be on your list of non-negotiables. You have mentioned the intent to study further. The fee will be managed via a student loan or some other source. Since you won't be earning for roughly two years, commit to investments once you have clarity on timelines and requirement?of?funds.

Further followed with risk profiling and basic investments in Mutual Funds based on the Risk profile
