An Expanding Job Market – March 2023
The job market continued to strengthen during the first quarter of 2023. However, compared to the revised data from the first quarter of 2022, there was a 36% decrease in jobs between January and March 2023. While the Federal Reserve steadily increased interest rates, the job market’s trajectory will have a continued impact on whether or not the campaign continues and at what pace.

The Job Market’s Continued Evolution
The job market gained 236,000 jobs in March 2023, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The unemployment rate decreased to 3.5%. Dow Jones predicted jobs growth would total 238,000 and a 3.6% national unemployment rate.
When comparing to past March reports:
In March 2023, the BLS reported some of the sectors with the highest job growth were government, professional and business services and healthcare. The workforce participation rate continued its upward trend to 62.6%.
Data published in early April 2023 showed there were 9.9 million job openings, the first time this number was less than 10 million since May 2021. The ratio of job openings to job seekers decreased from 1.9 to 1.7, the lowest since November 2021.
